Just picked up my new (to me) 03, 7500 mile tiger yesterday.
I have a couple of stupid questions:
Do they all crackle on the overrun through the pipes? (Bit like an F1 car really, I like it!)

More importantly, my bike has a fairly audible whine on the overrun at about 60-70mph. Is that normal? I've checked the chain, adjustment is correct at just over 35mm, weight off. I've also lubed it well with no difference.

Thanks for your help.

They all pop on the overrun peak - nice isn't it

Don't know about the whine though...

Yes! :-D

The transmission whine didn't seem so bad today. I'm taking it in to Windy Corner next week for a service, and I've asked them to tell me if its normal. I suspect it is.

Anyway, can anyone tell me why I didn't get a big trailie years ago? Its a long time since I've enjoyed riding a bike so much!

I suspect the whine is your chain, too tight. 35mm is not enough. try somewhere around 45mm.

As for why you didn't buy a big traily before. I suspect that you fell for the brain washing that you get from all the magazines.

afraid so, The manual quotes about 30 -35, but as mentioned before it aint enough. I run 45 this stops me having to play about each time I throw the wife on the back or throw the luggage on to go to Europe.

The worlds my Tigers playground, Pity it,s too small !!!

At 35mm your chain is way too tight. The whine is it wearing out quick and trying to take the bearings and sprockets with it. I run mine at 50. Yes the g/change clonks a bit, but the only whine is located on the pillion seat. (ouch)
The popple on over run is caused by the very small gap in the silencer spigot where it clamps onto the exhaust pipe I am sure its deliberate cos it could easily be designed out. Great aint it

OK so 45 or 50mm looks good.
Is that weight off or weight on the suspension?

The manual quotes weight off - tricky on an 03, must get a centrestand - so thats how I did it. I measured that the play reduces by 5mm when the weight is lowered onto the suspension.

Thanks for the tips.

Completely agree with nehpetsthegrey.

My transmission was fine until I took my girlfriend on the back. The whine was LOUD. I ended up adjusting the chain and checking play with a pillion on. 35mm isnowhere near enough. 45-50mm is more realistic.

Yes, they all seem to pop and bang on the overrun.
