I have not long been he owner of a Tiger, in fact just 48 hours roughly.

And to be honest I love it. I have not ridden many bikes as have not been riding very long but this is the first bike that I have had that feeling of really wanting to go out for a ride judt for the hell of it. Before I was never that bothered or it was just a case of necessity.

Anyway, I have noticed that at around 3.5k revs a funny rattling sound starts. It starts quietly but gets more noisy till about 4K and then starts to go again and is gone by 4.5K. the sound I can only try and describe as something sililar to having a few nails in a tin (like soup can type tin) and swirling it around gently.

Has anyone had this before or know what it could be?

It is an 04 Tger in Orange with about 5K miles on it.

thanks!!

I think that's roughly where the vibe spot is on the 955s, so it's likely to be something loose somewhere. I had a similar problem once which was eventually tracked down to a loose tax disc. The sound from that was similar to what you describe and only happened at certain engine speeds.

Hi Tappers,

Check where the heat shield is riveted to the exhaust. On my Tiger, the rear rivet loosened enough to allow the shield to vibrate, creating an annoying tinny rattle. To check it, try rev the bike, while pressing on the heat shield (while its cool!!).

Hope that’s all it is!

Sorry for not replying sooner been on holiday!! unluckily not with the bike!!!

Thanks for the replies I will check out what you have mentioned.

Out of all of your comments I know for sure it is not the Tax disk!! as at the moment I do not have one attached. I took it off as the garage I bought it from decided to take of the front bit of it! (very helpful of them!!) I am going to get one today.

I will have a look at the others though thanks again.

Richard

I checked the heat shield and it does not appear to be loose at all anywhere.

I tried revving the bike as suggested but could not hear the rattle at all.

It sounds as though it is coming from below me rather than anywhere else. I checked that everything was tightened and all appears to be fine any other ideas?

I seem to get a similar noise at about the same rev range (although noises are notoriously difficult to describe.....). It sounds rather tappetty to me but it's not very loud so I'm putting it down to a quirk of the bike. I can only hear it when I'm riding the bike rather than standing next to it. It reminds me of the main reason I never had fairings on all my old(er) British bikes - the reflected noise drives you mad as you think something is about to explode any moment! (not on Nortons of course ;-)

iansoady, I am glad that some else has the same noise.

It is exactly as you described more of a tapperty noise than anything else.

I am planning some time to get a mate who's been riding for years to listen to it and see what he thinks as he has a Tiger as well, and see what he thinks!

Anyone else had this or got any ideas?

before I could get my mate to have a look I think I have found the source of the problem.

Not sure whether it was second look or the booze that I had that helped me find it.

But basically the protective plate that attaches to the front of the exhaust system on the front just behind the front wheel. (Sorry about the non technical explanation but I do not know as much as I would like about it). Where it is connected by 3 screws to the exhaust system the bottom screw was knackered. I am hoping to find a resolution to it today.
