Just picked up the Tiger - and I think my decision to go for it was right. Isn't that engine amazing? And it seems rock steady from 0 to 100 - haven't felt the need to go faster yet. I can't feel the buffeting others speak of (but then 40 years on unfaired British bikes probably has made me immune), although being long of body and short of leg the wind blast does go straight into my face. I'll have a think about some of the screen mods which have been mentioned. And it seems very heavy.......

However I can't wait till I get it on the Routes Nationale et Departmentale.

Congrats and welcome...

As you already know... this engine is a blast... The new 1050 in the Speed Trip is even more fun... Not that I would ever get rid of my Tigger... 25k miles and going strong...

congrats on the purchase. I also do not have a lot of problems with buffeting/wind blast. Yes it could be slightly better but it is nowhere near as bad for me as it seems to be for others.

The 1050 engine to me was a bit disappointing. I rode a new ST a couple of weeks back and from the lights the Tiger would have creamed it. I felt there was no real world benefit to the 1050. I have also ridden the old ST with the 955. I also felt there was as much vibration from the 1050 as with the 955 just a little different.

Anyway, I digress. I am sure you will love your new mount and will soon be modding her to your own choice.

djr...

Try the Speed Triple... They detuned the 1050 in the ST to make it more tame... Why I don't know... But I rode both, back to back, and the Triple was a blast... The front wheel loves to be in the air... It had more throttle than I could use... Would be a fun second bike...

Spacecom, the new Speed Triple is also great as a fourth bike! Not that I was looking for another one --honestly!-- but it kept calling to me every time I went past the dealership. Totally different creature from the Tiger, of course, but really lots of fun in its own way. Brings back a lot of the feeling of the old Bonnevilles, but with much more power.

Ian...congratulations! Sounds as if you're really going to enjoy your new ride.

Spacecom, there is only 3bhp difference between the S3 and the ST albeit the S3 is 20kgs lighter. Similar to the old models then. I still think the 1050 is disappointing and is onlya move towards the mines bigger than yours camp. I have also ridden the old S3 but not the new one and know the differences between the bikes. What I was thinking though was that we will end up with a 1050 Tiger but IMHO that is not necessarily a move for the better.

Ian, sorry to hijack your post. You say you feel the Tiger heavy, compared to your other mounts, I am not exactly surprised. You will also find she is better handling, has brakes that actually work and will induce every bit as big a smile every time you ride her. Distance trips are a joy. What options have you bought or are planning, other than screen?

Ian...

Sorry as well...

If you haven't already... The Off-road Can has a sweet sound to it... IMO...

djr...

I guess it could also have to do with the sprokets... I'm sure that the S3 is geared a little lower...

I can always take a Sprint off the line with the Tiger, which is also geared lower...

And it seems very heavy.......
Compared to other bikes, the Tiger seems several things (tall, heavy, oddly shaped etc). I decided to give it a few months before I worried about changing things and glad I did. After a few thousand miles the bike seems very well balanced, although I have by now made a few changes.

The buffeting never bothered me, and like you I was more used to not fairing. The stock screen came off and a home built sports screen went on making me very happy.

As to being heavy, if you spend much time offroad and in mud, you will retain that impression. But if most time is spent on the hardball the feel is very solid and stable.

Enjoy.

and gets more solid and stable if you change to road tyres from the dual sport type.
