I got 217 miles before I had to pull in for gas. Actually, I had been running on the yellow light for at least 7 miles. THe yellow light didn't come on until after the gas gauge had floated around in the red box area of the gauge, up and down, for quite a while. WHen the gauge finally bottomed out, the yellow light came on, but I still wasn't out of gas.

When I filed up it took 5.16 gallons. But this is supposed to be a 6.3 gallon tank!? Where's the extra 1.2 gal.?

Do you mean that Tiger would have run on the yellow light for another 1.2 gallons worth of miles? I measured 42 miles per gallon. Have I got more than 47 more miles after the gauge bottoms out and the yellow light comes on before I truely come to a stop?

I have found the gauge to be an indicator ONLY, the reserve light is a lot more accurate and i have found this to be consistently accurate.

When that light comes on, you have got approx 6 litres of fuel remaining (1 1/3 gallons uk). That gives me at least 30 miles or more in 'touring mode' to find a fill up.

So you still had a good few miles to go before you would have run dry

Think this is the same with all of us. I get about 220miles to the tank in "touring mode" (as Jim calls it) before light comes on. When I fill up I still only fill ~18 litres, which means I would still have 6 litres worth of riding left, should roughly match your 1.2 gallons. Problem is I chicken out every time and fill at first possible opportunity...

I tell you, two things I'd like to have on a motorcycle (other than a short skirt without knickers) that I've never heard of. Accurate gas guage and true speedometer.

Empty on the fuel guage for me means the warning light will be on shortly and as has been said when this lights up I normally have 6l left.

Point to bear in mind, it is extremely unlikely you will be able to use all this, so I tend to find fuel ASAP after the warning light comes on. This also means you do not drag up any possible ***** from the bottom of the tank

I've resolved to get a small, maybe 1 litre plastic gas can and mount it in the case for emergenccies. THen just forget about the gas.

Be careful, You need a good quality fuel cointainer to take bike vibes. Look in camping stores. I carry a plastic 1 litre container when touring in remote areas. Mainly because I grew up on dirt bikes that have reserve petrol taps and I am paranoid about not wanting to push a Tiger more than 10 metres. Make sure the container is petrol compatible. Some are for metho/alcohol only and automotive fuel will harden or dissolve them. There are heaps of cheap aluminium types but you will find that vibrations on a bike wear a hole in these really fast if they rub on something.
