DealerTool and TuneBoy ???????

f I were to do my own wrenching, are one of these products a worth while investment?

Trying to read through the forums and the DealerTool website. If I wanted to do a Carb-Sync, is using this tool a method of doing it or do you use the Carb-Tune or other vacuum measureing device to sync the carbs and then manualy adjusting them or does this tool do it for you of course using the edit option for additional $100.00?

If I purchase the "Key", would this key work for all of my wrenching needs or does this key expire ?

Any other input would be appriciated

If you're looking at an 02 then of course it's FI and strictly it's the throttle bodies rather than non-existent carbs you sync. And neither tuneboy nor dealer tool will help, you need carb tune or similar.

AFAIK dealer tool allows you to read & reset error codes which is very useful in tracking down elusive problems. Tuneboy/Edit allows downloading of custom maps as well which many of us here have found great for improving running, especially eliminating surging around 2-3,000 rpm.

Although other people swear by simpler (and cheaper) fixes like O2 eliminators.

The tuneboy key is for a single bike and lasts for ever. Don't know about dealer tool.

If you just want to check error codes and reset them, an automotive OBD II code reader works fine. That's a standard OBD II connector under the seat, somewhat to my pleasant surprise.

Dealertool and Tuneboy do the same thing. DTC reading and resetting. Setting Closed Throttle Position (and CO on non Lambda bikes). Diagnostic tests on all EFI components.

TuneEdit is used for remapping.

Dealertool requires a key per ECU, as does TuneEdit. Tuneboy does not require a key and can be used across multiple machines.

Dealertool is about a third the price of Tuneboy, with TuneEdit being more expensive still.
