Hi Folks
I was wondering if anyone has used soft luggage on a Tiger 800 without using racks?
Will the exhaust BBQ the luggage?
Has anyone made a homemade rack? If so any tips or gothchas?
Thanks

I used soft panniers recently on a longish ride but did make a few modifications to ensure things stayed where they were meant too. Firstly, I added a "tool tube" to the left side rear sub-frame, there are bolt mounting points in the frame here so really easy to make up some brackets to fit.

You can just see the white tube under the pannier in the photo.

On the right side, I made sure that the pannier was very secure (after a little excessive heat burning the pannier backing) to the framework to ensure very minimal movement on the heat shield.

I have used hard panniers before and found they can cause damage to more than just the cases in the event of a relatively minor fall, (I expect others will have differing opinions).:laugh2:

i strapped on the Giant Loop Great Basin bag on my Tiger 800 and have no regrets though the buy in was tough to swallow but much less than hard bags.
Came with an exhaust shield that clamps around your exhaust directly aft of the stock Arrow heat shield and appears like enough clearance to avoid direct contact.
Storage is sufficient for an overnighter and if packed properly acts like a cushion if the bike is dropped...
A big plus is if you have to dab, you don't have to worry about hard bags plowing the aft of your leg.

Irish style waterproof? Waterproof Inner bags....
I lived in Ireland for 2 years, no such product exists. ;-)

Anything close would be Giant Loop or something from Ortlieb.
