I've done what you did...twice now. Once after midnight on a Sunday and went the wrong way on a road. The other I had planned to stop in a town for gas, a drink and a rest, but the storms from the previous days left the entire town without power. Had to ride 20 miles to the next town. Both times I went (like you) about 10 miles AFTER the gauge went blank and just dashes for miles to empty. Put in 4.9 US gallons both times.
Been getting 41-42mpg US with all three OE bags on it, though they are mostly empty. I seemed to get about 2mpg better without the panniers. These numbers are calculated from miles ridden and gas put in, not the computer average. The computer seems to show about 2mpg better mileage than actual.
I've got about 1700 miles on mine now. All a mix of 70-75 highway, two lane running, around town, to work in traffic, and riding wheelies across intersections, etc. Nothing really consistent but I count on at least 40mpg and 200 miles per tank no matter what so far. I'm good with that.
