Does Empty really mean no fuel? No

Today I misjudged my trip and had a bit of a scare. If you watch the Distance to Empty it counts down until it reads 5 miles to empty. The last bar on the fuel gauge also disappears. I was able to squeeze 10 more miles out of it. When I filled up with fuel it took 4.9 gallons. So it had .3 or .4 gallons in the tank.

I don't want to ever get that low again

So far on my 3,000 mile road trip I am averaging 42 mpg. I weighed the bike full, with me (170lbs) and it weighs 902 lbs with two panniers and an extra duffle bag on the tail rack.

I am leaving this Thursday on a 2,000 mile trip, will report fuel mileage when I get back.
How many miles on your bike so far and what do you get normally for mpg. Do you have the arrow exhaust as some claim that reduces fuel mileage numbers to. I do have the Arrow exhaust so it will be interesting to compare numbers.

I've done what you did...twice now. Once after midnight on a Sunday and went the wrong way on a road. The other I had planned to stop in a town for gas, a drink and a rest, but the storms from the previous days left the entire town without power. Had to ride 20 miles to the next town. Both times I went (like you) about 10 miles AFTER the gauge went blank and just dashes for miles to empty. Put in 4.9 US gallons both times.

Been getting 41-42mpg US with all three OE bags on it, though they are mostly empty. I seemed to get about 2mpg better without the panniers. These numbers are calculated from miles ridden and gas put in, not the computer average. The computer seems to show about 2mpg better mileage than actual.

I've got about 1700 miles on mine now. All a mix of 70-75 highway, two lane running, around town, to work in traffic, and riding wheelies across intersections, etc. Nothing really consistent but I count on at least 40mpg and 200 miles per tank no matter what so far. I'm good with that.
