K&N Oil Filter Leaked

I installed one of those K&N filters with the nut spot welded on the bottom. After 4000 miles it started leaking around one of the spot welds. I was on a trip and 750 miles from home. At the time I could not believe it and thought the seal was leaking or the oil pan had cracked. After cleaning it up I started the bike and sure enough the oil flowed from around the welded on nut. I sent off a comment to K&N but as expected, nothing. Just thought I'd pass along my experience.

I have read of this happening before. I have never used one of their oil filters because the size of the nut, location, and method of attachment is a BAD idea that should never have been acted upon by K&N, IMHO.

and just to be the devils' advocate, I have used K&N filters on everything I own for at least 20 years without a single failure.... A couple of my vehicles were in the 80psi oil pressure range too!

As with anything mass produced there are bound to be a few incidents at some point... You should contact K&N and tell them what happened. I am sure they would be interested in learning what happened and may even send you a replacement/refund....

"and just to be the devils' advocate…"

K&N might wish you had chosen a different way of saying your point.

I wrote K&N on June 24th. I've heard nothing.

This was my first K&N oil filter. I agree that mass production can let a few get by. I'm not upset really. Surprised mostly. Can't say having no rear brake for 750 miles was comforting but I made it just fine. It was the 2 days of detailing and disassembly to get all the oil out that was the inconvenience.

I have also never had a problem with the K&N filter. Used a bunch of them on several different bikes now. Hope there quality control isn't going down the toilet.

I hear ya man. That had to be just plain awful!! And I wouldn't blame you if you never used another one... I just wanted to throw it out there that by far and wide they have a great track record.
