I need help!
While on a long ride a couple weeks ago I got an EMS light on my 2014 Thunderbird LT. It ran completely normal and it was labor day so I pushed to get to a city along my route with a dealership to read the code in the morning.
The code was P0078 - Exhaust Motor malfunction
As far as I and the dealership knew, the Thunderbird does not have an exhaust motor? We assumed it was electrical, I had a smashed out Aux light from a rock the first day of the ride and a GPS tracker that had been pulling too much current for awhile now, so I assumed it was one of these two things confusing the ECU.
I drove another 1,000 miles home and it still operated normally, but the first starts of each day seemed more sluggish than usual (this could have been in my head).
After I got home, I replaced my smashed aux light, disconnected the GPS tracker and cleared the code with DealerTool. After about 15 min of riding, the code returned and when I got home I could not get it to clear.
After troubleshooting today, I disconnected any and all aftermarket accessories that I have added and still got the code. It seems to be thermal cycle related as I can clear it when the bike is cold and it won't come back until the bike has been running for several minutes. As the bike continues to run, if I clear the code it will reappear at shorter intervals until the bike gets fully up to temperature and then I can't clear the code at all.
I've checked all the connectors I can find, all of the fuses and I am at the end of my troubleshooting ability. Two of the relays were cold after it had ran awhile, I couldn't find anything that identified the relays but, I assume one of the cold ones was the starter relay. The bike has about 15,000 miles on it and has had no issues including at the 12,000 mile service earlier this year.
The closest dealership is a haul, so that is my last resort. I am open to any ideas, please help!
