How Hot does your engine cover get?

Got back from a 400klm run yesterday, during the last part of the ride I really noticed the heat emanating from the left side engine cover. THe day was reasonably mild as it was around 5pm. The cover was pretty hot so was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this or is it abnormal. Bike was running fine.

Both sides get quite hot. It doesn't emanate a lot of heat on me, the rider, certainly not to an uncomfortable degree, like you hear some bikes do, but I wouldn't want to accidentally touch the metal bits on either side until it has an hour or two to cool down. All bikes get hot, though this one does seem to get exceptionally so (more so than my other bikes, which were all smaller in cc)...I figure it's the nature of a large 1600/1700cc beast (and maybe parallel twin? <-- not sure about that).

Just wondering.. is the original post still on your "break in" period? If so.. that would explain why your bike is running hotter then expected. During the break in.. the bike used a different oil.. and it definitely runs hotter. Once you change the break in oil.. it gets better.

THanks for all the comments.. The bike is passed run in. I really only noticed the heat after I had the Short TORS put on and the mapping changed to suit. I now have actually noticed a light brown burn mark on the left side engine header pipe, at the first bend in the pipe. None on the right side. Also now awaiting a new thermostat housing and gasket as mine is leaking. Maybe all linked?
