I was riding with a buddy last week, and he told me that he had a hard time seeing my brake light when I was stopped if we were driving into the sun. He recommended that I get a modulator to make it flash. I searched the web, and found one from KAHTEC that I liked. It flashes six times rapidly when you first apply the brakes, and it flashes three times every three seconds after that as long as you have the brakes applied. I found the green/purple wire on the right side for the tail light harness, and installed the modulator very easily. Took me about 15-20 mins to get everything connected and back together. I think this will dramatically improve the visibility of my rear end when stopped.

I've got a Signal Dynamics flasher and it gives you a choice of flash patterns. Mine flashes 5 times and goes solid. I like this pattern because I can always release and reapply the brake if I want the pattern to repeat.

Regardless of which brand you choose (or flashing manually), a flashing tail light greatly improves your visibility to those behind you which is exactly why New York State (and I'm sure others) recommends that the rider flash their brake lights when stopping. I notice that cars generally back off a little when I apply my brakes now, whereas before I installed the flasher, they just tended to slow at the same rate as me.

The kahtec intelligent module that I installed flashes 6 times when you engage the brakes, and then flashes three times every three seconds thereafter. If you release the brakes and reapply, it flashes 6 times again. Even if you hold the brake in, it continues to flash. That's what I liked about this model.

I have the Signal Dynamics unit but I use the CA DOT certified pattern. CA tends to set standards in many states and this way no matter where I go I'll be legal. If you go to CA and use the wrong pattern you could end up with a little fix it ticket.

What is the CA DOT certified pattern? Since you've got a Signal Dynamics box, I'm guessing it's the other pattern (from the one I'm using - 5 flashes then solid). In NY, I'm pretty sure the brake light is supposed to be solid only, even though the official drivers manual recommends flashing your taillight when stopping. Go figure ... bureaucrats.

At the end of the day, I'll do what's safest for me and I'll worry about the cops when the time comes.

CA requires the solid brake light after the flashes. If I remember right it was 4 then solid but they may now have allowed the 5 then solid.

Well if the officer that pulled you over was anything like me when I worked there, then yes. I'm the SOB that would have you scraping your tint off your side windows on the side of the freeway with a credit card.

How does the signal dynamics flasher wire in?
