Hard Starting Cold

Since the weather's cooled off, the Bird is getting harder and harder to start cold. At present the bike is finally idling on the third try. One thing I notice is that the idle is pretty low until after that third try then it keeps itself going. Anyone else having this issue? I'm getting close to the 500 service now, just waiting to take it in and have it looked at then.

BTW, I still can't get this freakin belt adjustment right. I went in again last weekend and cranked it down another quarter turn. The obvious CHIRP was gone after the first adjustment, afterwards turning in to a bit of a chatter coming out of first. Now after making it slightly tighter, it's developed a whine in second gear at about 2500rpm. I will be a happier camper when these two issues are solved.

Cold weather starting....

I'm not having any problem with cold weather starting. I do have the TORs and the EFI tune for them though, not sure how much difference that makes. Seems to start right away and idle well no matter what the temperature is......

I have difficulty starting mine when cold. A little blip on the throttle usually takes care of it. I think its an issue with the MAP. Those that have the TOR MAP don't seem to have this problem. I've ordered the BC pipes and I'm hopeful that the MAP that comes with them will correct the cold start issue.

Mine has no issues, but at first it had the opposite...the HOT starting issue. Same thing happens but when starting the engine when it's hot. The TORs tune cured it 100%. Bike runs better with that tune too, even with stock pipes. You may wanna ask your dealer to load it for you. Might fix her right up and run better to boot. A couple others have tried the tune even with stock pipes and found it better too.

you will find your engine is still very tight at your milage, also the T-Bird is different to all previous twins as in it does not have a manual fast idle, on the t-bird its automatic but does seem to take a bit longer to kick in, just give it a little throttle to keep it going a moment until it settles.

as for the belt you should not be having to much problems getting it roughly rite, there is a lot of room for error with the tension, it does not need to be perfect.

I started mine yesterday after sitting for several weeks (been rainly hear and I have been traveling). It fired right up, but took two tries to say running.

This is what mine is doing. It cranks and fires right away but seems to idle too low to keep running initially.

Prior to my first service (1'000 km / 600 miles) when starting the motor would (finger is on the starter ALL the time until 100% catch):
- turns over a couple of times
- catch and fire the odd one or two times
- return back to turning over a few more times
- then catch and fire away nicely.
Tick over would be around 850 rpm. A little to low for my likings!

After service:
- turns over a couple of times
- catches and fires away nicely.
Tick over is now a little under 1'000 rpm

Leave the pork pies for now - get the sausage rolls while they're hot!

Had the same problem (hard starting) hot or cold. My dealer checked the fuel pressure and found it to be faulty, changed the fuel regulator and it's perfect now. Starts first time.

Ride Safe.
