Oil Change problem

I changed the oil in the Bird this weekend and I had an extremely hard time getting the filter off and on with a regular filter strap wrench. I finely got it done but next time I am going to get one of those cap type wrenches that fits on the end of the filter and you use a 3/8 ratchet to get it off and on I think that will make it a-lot easier. I think that having a lift is almost a must to change the filter there is just very little room to get to it on the kick stand. One more point is that It took about 1.5 gal of oil to hit the mid mark on the stick.

First of all, you're mistaken about the 1 and a 1/2 gallons. I've changed mu oil twice now and drained it to the point i couldn't get another drop out and i got a little under 4.5 quarts in which is just about exactly what triumph states is the dry fill level...1.1 U.S. gallons.

As to the filter, i use the cap type but i found for some reason it's just a hair too tight and didn't fit the triumph filter. The first one tho was a K&N, and if you use those you only need a socket wrench because they have a 14mm nut end on them. (i think it was 14mm) Bosch makes a good filter for about $6 that DOES fit those cup wrenches tho. Thats what i'd be using if my dealer wasn't supplying me with free oil and filters.

just a minor point here, the manual does show the cap type in the "special tools" section (presumably it's one that fits *grin*)

Thanks for the help as with all things if you don't take the time to completely read the directions you are sure to make mistakes. I should have screwed the dip stick in to check the oil level and 1.1 gal would be correct.

What are the part numbers for the K&N and Bosch filters?

The Bosch is model 3300. There is also another one, the 3323 which also fits but it laonger so it's got more media in it. That i would think is better, but i could be missing something. I used it once on the speedy but it hit the jack when i lifted it because it is as i said longer. But on the Tbird the filter is parallel to the ground so it may be the better option if more media is better. It would i guess mean the bike woul hold slightly more oil.

I'm Not sure about the K&N because i never bought one. My dealer supplied that one and he gives me free oil and filter. The bosch i bought all the time for my speedmaster. I researched filters for bikes and the bosch constantly got great reviews as a top one, and at $6 thats all i needed to hear. There are tests where they cut them open and inspect the quality of the media and the valve and the bosch always scored real high. Thats what i'd use again if not for my free ones from the dealer. Not sure what he's going to supply me with because the first change which they did they used a K&N. then when they sent me oil and filter the second time to do myself, they included a triumph branded one that has no nut on the end.
