Squeel from Rear of bike?

I was tooling around the neighborhood on the Bird the other day without a helmet on, I know, I know, it was just around our gated community. Anyway, when I passed a brick wall and accelerated I noticed a sound alot like a wheel bearing going bad. So, I would turn my ear back towards the rear wheel and upon acceleartion, load on the rear wheel, I would hear the squeel. I told this to a friend of mine that is a good mechanic and he mentioned on his Yamaha Star with belt drive that his did that when he first got it and discovered the belt's alignment adjustment was off and that once he corrected the alignment, so that the belt was not riding on the side of the drive, it quit.

Well, I have not had time to look at it that closely so I thought I would throw this out to you guys and see what you thought? I guess if it does not look that hard to adjust the alignment I might give it a shot. But, at this time I have enough miles on her now she is ready to go in for the first service so I thought I could have the dealer look at it.

I'll update once I find something out.

Man I miss Oklahoma.

Back to the topic, I have an occasional 'squeak' come from the rear on accelleration. It doesn't happen all the time and it took a bit before I was sure it was me and not some other noise I was picking up. It makes sense that it would be a belt rubbing that would cause it but I've (obviously) not looked into adjusting the belt. I'm 2000 miles into the bike now, let me know what the dealer says when you get your checkup.

I already researched the belt alignment issue to some degree talking to the dealer and triumph USA. The belt is supposed to rest against one of the edge flanges. I would assume if it does so TOO HARD because the wheel is not aligned straight enough that could be the symptom. But they will not adjust so it's in the middle according to what i'm told because if you adjust it that way they will simply travel to one side once you start riding anyways. So from what i get it should rest against one side or the other and therefore you can't tell by looking at it whether it's resting too hard against it.

this is one of the many reasons I WISH THEY WOULD GET THOSE D**M SHOP MANUALS OUT!!!!! They tell you "preorder the Tbird now to have it in time to enjoy it during the summer", then they ship the manuals 3 months later so that if you have issues you CAN'T enjoy it during the summer.....I gotta tell you, that irritates the F*** outa me!

I completely agree...got some of that squealing too, and annoyed that they just look at me blankly when trying to order a workshop manual. If it's ONLY 3 more months, I'll be happy.

By the way, this sounds like the chirping issue big jack at the other forum mentioned and i also had. Does it sound sorta like chirping? because if thats what you're hearing it's not the belt, it's the motor and it does it mostly when cold. The reaaon i know that is for one, when new mine did it while waiting at a red light, so it's not the belt. Now it only does it when running and mostly if not always when cold. Second, when it DOES do it, letting off the throttle makes it stop. That i supposed doesn't completely eliminate the belt as a possibility, but the fact it once did it at a standstill does. Anyways, if thats the issue you're hearing it's not the belt. Might be something like the cam chain tensioner or some such thing.

Well I do classify the noise as more of a 'chirp' as it is quick and a single note. However, it is definetely from the rear of the bike and only on take off. I do know the issue Jack has spoken of and have heard different top end engine noises that are similar to what he is describing.

Mainly on take-off here too, but like i said i once heard it at a stop. This was literally a block away from my dealer upon taking delivery. So first mile. After that it never happened at a stop again, so it could be you just never had it happen at a stop so it doesn't seem to you like it could be the engine. I'd feel the same too if not for that single incident that never once re-occured. Who knows...

Yah Dazco, I understand the belt placement, but what is happening is that the adjustment has the belt trying to crawl up the side of the pulley and the friction is most likely the cause of the squeel or chirping coming from the bike. Thatch is correct in that it is more of a chirping and not a squeel since it is not a constant noise. I'll be brinding in my bike for the first service and this will be one of the itmes I have them look into, I'll post if something is discovered.

Right, but all i'm saying is that i hear that same chirping and that i once heard the exact same sound while stopped at a light. So if we are indeed talking about the same thing then it's definately not the belt. If we aren't, then it may be. All i know is the chirp i hear is exactly the same sound i hear at the red light that day. i will be interested to hear if the dealer can find what it is in any case.
