We got snorkel

Yep, looking around in the airbox i saw what you see here....a rubber snorkel you'll find towards the tank. Just stick your hand in the airbox and you'll feel the rubber. Pulls right out as tho it's not glued in, tho there is some rubber cement on it. But it will stay in w/o that so no biggie if you wanna try pulling it.

anyways, i pulled it and went for a ride. hard to say, but it seems like it pulls to redline a bit quicker, tho could be placebo. But if it were to help, it would be the upper RPMs where you would indeed notice most or all. I'm leaving it out for now till i have a few miles on it then back in it goes to see if i notice a LOSS of performance. So if anyone else wants to give it a go, lets hear what you thought. only takes a couple minutes to give it a try.

EDIT: this morning it seemed as tho i was getting slight improvement everywhere including the low end. Still unsure if it's placebo tho. And since i did this our area has been suffering the worse smoke from fires i have ever witnessed (it's very hard to breathe right now !) and at the same time temps of 105. So i'm not sure if thats affecting the bike at all. Maybe it would be more noticeable otherwise.

PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU TRY THIS: As you can see in the pic, this part is glued in with some rubber cememt, (actually i think it's gasket sealer) tho it pulls right out like theres no glue. However, it occurs to me that if any of this glue comes off and gets sucked in it could clog the fuel injection. So if you try this, be warned ! I am going to pull all the glue off mine if i put it back in. And i would also feel around in there if you pull it to see if you can feel any pieces of rubber cement in the channel the snorkel came out of and pull it out of there.

Your a pioneer! I'll pull it out after my 500 mile service, which is scheduled for this coming Monday. What do you think the purpose of this device is?

usually on air intakes they are designed to achieve a more directed air flow to the carbs or fuel injection intakes.

I suppose it's there to tune the airbox. But once you change anything such as the filter or pipes or tune, etc, i think the tuning of the box may be open for improvments. Just a guess on my part, but generally that IS what the inner snorkels are for. But there are often improvments seen when removing them. So it's worth a shot. If there is an improvment it's certainly nothing to write home about. But higher RPM's is where the bike's achilles heel is, and it seemed to breathe freer. Hopefully others will try and we will get a general consensus. Theres also the lip in the hold down braket i mentioned in another thread,. But that requires you mod that part and i don't really want to cut anything till i see others report improvment. Those guys are the pioneers, not me....pulling this thing you have nothing to lose, as it pops right back in.

They often restrict the amount of intake area too tho, so in many cases they give a performance increase by tossing them. The ones on the 900 cruisers make a big difference. They have an outer one then one similar to the Tbird inside the box on the older ones. (my 05 only had the outer one)

i also wanted to take off the air channel that is screwed onto the base of the seat as rayzor did, but mine wouldn't come off easy. removed all the screws but it seemed glued on and very tightly. So i left it on. Appears to be quite restrictive tho.

Odds are that it is designed to reduce the turbulence of the incoming air. Sometime it's not how much, but how fast you can get the air in there.

True, thats basically what tuning the airbox is for the most part as i understand. Theres also another one it butts up against facing the other way. So it still has the effect to some degree but there is now less restriction and more space in the airbox. I will run like this for a day or 3 more then put it back in and see what i notice. If there is a difference thats subtle enough that i can't be sure, i always find setting it back to the original setup is where it become most noticable, more so that from the original setup to the modded one.

Wish there was a way to take out the box completely with exposed cone filter pods, but alas that look has most likely died along with carbs.

As it is, with the bird being a butt breather, I'm wondering if my diet could affect power. I might be able to figure out some sort of dietary NOS system. Might have to vent the bottom of the saddle though.

Well, if you really want a serious performance gain try cutting a hole in the seat right above the filter intake and eat a LOT of beans. Of course you may have to get the bike mapped a bit leaner to take advantage of this, but it gibe the phrase "butt dyno" a whole new meaning.
