Excessive back firing

I purchased a thunderbird about a month ago. I have noticed constant back firing on deceleration. Has anyone else noticed this?

I took it in for the first service and the mapping was checked. I was told by the dealership to expect this, but this is constant. I have never owned a bike that continuously backfired. (Constant Popping)

If anyone else has noticed this or if you have an opinion I'd love to hear it.

Thanks

Yup - it's great isn't it!
The CLASSIC sound of the Triumph PTwin.
There's no other bike out there that sounds the same - ENJOY IT - you'll start loving it soon!

I know that the America and (my) Speedmaster 'pop' on deceleration. It's normal.
As I've said - it's the trade mark of Triumph and the 270° PTwins.

As Dazco puts it: "Sounds like a Hot-Rod..."

Relax & Enjoy!

It does pop a lot for a stock bike. And if you put TORs on it it will pop even more ! I'm on the fence....i like it, but i also like a nice even decel w/o popping. But if i could have the latter right now i'd have to think long and hard about it. I do think if i had the choice i'd reduce it a bit tho because at times it sounds like i'm in the middle of a battlefield.

One thing tho which i think is good about it, and i do this a lot, is when you come up on a car in the lane next to you and you have a gut feeling he may pull into your lane, get in a lower gear so the revs are up then get just behind and let off the gas just for a second. If the revs are up enough it will pop like crazy, and he WILL hear you, especially with TORs!

I've found a free flow air filter reduces backfire. It's still 'gurglie' but doesn't do the full pop as much.

I kind of miss it.

I just realized it, but mine doesn't pop at all on deceleration. I'd say it sounds gurggly, like Thatch described. Maybe because this is my first bike, but I think the sound of mine is deep, throaty and rumbly. In fact, I picked up my EZ Pass this morning and the local office is in one of those single story office complexes with parking right by the front door. I parked right up front and when the guy was filling in the EZ Pass tag details, he asssumed it was a HD (herecy, I know), he said it sounded good.

That gurgly sound is what we're talking about, but with stock pipes thats what popping sounds like. TORs will turn the gurgling into more obvious pops because they aren't suppressed by the stock pipe's restrictive baffling. Thats how mine sounded with stock pipes, like you described. They all pop, it's just a matter of the pipes you have and how obvious they allow the popping to be.

Ahh. Thanks. Just chalk my comment up to uninformed noobieness then. sorry.

My first car was a british racing car and it popped all the time on decerleration and I loved it!! I'll get the new pipes and TOR then just to get that pop.

Before I installed the filter I got definite 'popping' often times up under the seat but typically out the back. That still happens now but much less often. Since the filter it is mostly regulated to the gurgle.

Regardless I like the sound so it's of no issue to me, but if you want to reduce it the filter seems to help.
