Mid Term Storage

Hi Guys/Gals,

I will be abandoning my Thunderbird Commander for maybe 6-12 months and am chasing some "do's" and "don'ts" for storing.

There seems to be some conflicting ideas around the web so would appreciate some honest feedback from some people who have had to store their pride and joy for a similar length of time.

Cheers

Mine is stored for six months every year (November - April, roughly) during our cold and wet season, and here is what I do:

* Change oil and filter so that clean oil is resting inside the engine. Since our engines are FI, you don't have to worry about the old practice of fogging the cylinders.

* Overinflate tires by a few pounds to lessen chance of flat spots and the inevitable seepage of air over time; place tires on carpet squares (not on cold concrete). Obviously, if you have a way of raising and storing the bike off the floor, that'd be even better.

* Fill up tank to bottom of neck with ethanol-free gas to prevent both rust of tank and corrosion of fuel lines. Add appropriate amount of Stabil Storage to the gas to keep it fresh. Run bike for 10 to 20 minutes to make sure the fuel and additive (and above new oil) is distributed well.

* Hook battery up to Battery Tender (not Charger).

* Clean the bike well, and place a breathable sheet over it to keep dust, etc. off it.

That's all I do, and it starts up like a gem every spring.
