why does my teebird sound like a sewing machine at idle?
is it the cams? the air box? the fan? at idle it has a high pitched sound like my moms old sewing machine.
at speed I do not hear that, and with the TOR's even at low speed its not there, but at the stop lights....

I'd vote for fan noise, but can't say for sure without hearing it,however I'd take it back to the dealership's service dept and have the noise doctumented in case it evolves into a warranty issue. Need to CYA with any and all concerns while its still under warranty.

Is this the (in)famous Triumph whirl? I've read some threads here somewhere about it and have heard it on the bikes I test rode. I don't know the source of the sound, but have noticed it and I think you can hear it on most of the Triumphs. Don't particularly like it but it's not something that would break the deal. Does anyone know the source of the sound? Thatch, does your comment mean it will subside as it breaks in?

That's what that means. I heard a lot more of the top end 'whirling' when the bike was new. That's not to say there isn't any engine noise now but it is much less obvious with much less of the 'sewing machine' sound.
I can't say if that is everyone's experience or not, but it's mine.

Mine is still there, but I have a couple of caveats: I noticed the "sewing machine" sound a lot on my Bonneville. When I got the Bird, I could hear it while it was idling, but not at speed - it is less than the Bonneville and the pipes drown out the remainder when running.
Then I got my wind screen and can hear some of the noise it at speed - the screen must reflect some back. Given this, my belief is that it is always there, but less and not noticeable at speed except under certain circumstances.

I believe the noise you are hearing is the chain for the cams. They make quite a bit of noise. That's why most auto mfrs. went to belts.

I don't recall hearing it even new, but i may just not recall. In any event, if it DID, it doesn't now at 6000+ miles. Or at least not enough to hear it unless you listen real hard, which i did today after reading this. What i heard was so low i had to listen nhard for a bit to notice it at idle.

Yes, that is the "Triumph whirl", yes, it is normal, yes, it's the top end of the engine, and no, you cannot do anything about it except learn to love it. It's the lovely sound of a very fine engine doing it's thing.
