First time to really open it up
And I was shocked....I rode it like I borrowed it during its break in period....The weather was nice today (45deg F) so I had it out for a little while.
I had the chance to open it up and WOW!!!
This bike can be very smooth and refined when you want and then when you want it all hell can break loose....much faster than anything I have ever ridden....and controllable fast at that.
Im so glad I decided on a Thunderbird!!

But it's very deceiving, at least to me it is. I really can't tell how fast i'm accelerating till i look at the speedo. The bike never really sounds like it's working hard, and that combined with the smoothness it seems like you aren't accelerating as fast as you are till you look at the speedo. Then you realize you aren't going 50, you're already at 70.

I hate the the 500-1000 mile break in. "Gradually increase speed". Duh, I'm doing 80 on the way home from work, but I did it gradually.

Yeah but you're only spinning 3000k at that point, so you're not remotely staining things.
If you think the initial break-in is a bitch, just try a second break in after the bb kit. That's torture. (must be why I'm not doing a very goo job following it)

Thatch,
You should not have to put no more than 100 light miles on the BB Kit and then you should be able to start to work you way to redline and start romping away at arouound 200 miles, that's my plan after talking to many people about break in of the rings and cams. Everything elese is borken in and it does not take long for the cams to seat.

OKCTriple, I am waiting on the con-rod bushing to complete my BB installation. In discussing the break in period, I was told the same as you. Go easy without holding steady rpms for the first 100 miles and then work it to the redline. After 300 miles bring it in for the full synthetic.
Breaking in the top end...everything else is already broken in.
Should be done soon and then I have to wait for mother nature to cooperate. It may take a while to clear up the 45 inches of snow in the Philly area.

Yeah, I'm not really taking it all that easy. But even 20 miles of riding it a bit gingerly after you've bumped the power is more than I care to be doing. I really didn't have trouble with (at least the first half of) the initial break-in period. I had been off a bike for a few years so I was getting used to things myself. But now....

I here ya Willy, I'm just waiting on the CAT delete to be made and installed on mine and weather to cooperate as well. Here in Oklahoma it has snowed four times in the past few months which is very unusual here. And when it has not snowed it has rained. Yesterday was the first decent day (sunny and 55 deg.) to ride in quite sometime.
I can't imagine it will take me anytime to put a few hundred miles on her and then let the games begin.
