Thoughts On Tbird Pipes
On my Bonnie i changed out the pipes to Tors because it sounds so much better. its winter in MN where i am right now and i haven't heard the Tbird yet. for those of you that have bought a new Tbird have you made a change or the standard pipes good sounding. You don't need loud to sound good, but i don't want something that sounds like a Honda either. by the way i do plain on getting a Tbird if it handles the way all of you are talking.....

I've written way too much about this topic. There are already a number of choices out there. I'll say I do think the stock bird doesn't have much presence and the typical triumph whirl can over ride what exhaust note there is.
The main choices are TORs if you like the stock look (or a shorter version of such) D&D's and British Customs. Foran and Staintune have some as well but they are well over $1000 for them.
I chose the BC pipes for a number of reasons. A brief writeup of them as well as a comparison video can be found here...

There is a 'Bird with the BC pipes installed at our local dealer. They sound and look fantastic. Mind you, I don't have that bike but if I did that would be the first thing I would do to it.

I like the TORs a lot. Not that they are as good or better than BC or any of the others. I haven't heard those except in clips, and clips are not reliable. One reason i can be sure of that is i recorded my tors and they sounded nasty in the clip compared to in person. In any case, they are the cheapest option and are good at $450 USD, plus your dealer will likely cut you a 10% discount for buying the bike from them for a total of $405. The BC's do have the advantage of being stainless which is great if you scratch them, as they can be polished out. the rest IMO are anywhere from not great looking to downright fugly. (can you say "foran"?) I prefer the stock look over anything i have seen so far too, so that keeps me happy with the TORs, which look exactly like the stock pipes except the hole in the end is smaller. Yes, smaller, tho they are straight thru unlike the stockers.

May sound a litle strange, but the stock pipes sound pretty good to me. Also sound changes quite a bit when I wear different helmets. Actually sound better with the full face than the 3/4...I really want to hear a set in person as I can't tell on the video's. Still getting used to all that torque so I don't need more grunt!!!

i bought the british customs pipes and they are great. when just cruising, you dont hear much but as soon as you give it throttle, they have great sounds. they are not obnoxious like hd but they do have a presence.

I'm kinda with you on that. I like the stock pipes. But i like the Tors too because they add a bit of power and i also like the sound with ear plugs. the stockers sound better than tors IMO, but just not quite loud enough to hear well with ear plugs. I wear the plugs because of wind noise, not bike noise. If i didn't wear plugs tho i'd prefer the stockers because the tone to my ear is deeper and sweeter. Just a bit too quiet. VERY little tho, as i'm no fan of loud pipes at all. In any case, i like them both and seem to change them every now and then for a change of pace and to see how i remember how the other ones sound. Can't really make up my mind. but the one thing that would make me choose any other pipe is power. Give me one that adds another 4 or 5 HP over tors and i'm there if they look good.

Also take you screen plans into consideration. I do not hear the Triumph whirl, as Thatch states, over the standard Tbird exhaust, which is good. But, when I have my windscreen on, then I hear the whirl. The windscreen reflects more of the engine noise back to the rider.

I have to agree with Daz on this one, I have the short TOR's and love them, I maninly went with the shorts to show off the chrome rear pulley. However, I have grown to like the looks of stock pipes, if you have ever ridden behind a Bird you would know what I mean. The sound of the TOR's is perfect. My BB kit is installed and the CAT delete is in the process of being made and installed. I suspect the CAT deletion will increase the sound output but I am hoping not by much for I really like the sound and sound level of the short TOR's.
