Hey all,

I am looking to become part of the motorcycle owners community! I need advice on what to buy, how to buy it, and any tips or tricks I should know before i dive in. A little background on myself, I have never ridden a full size bike. Growing up i have ridden little 50CCs and i have a general knowledge of how to ride (shifting and what not). I am looking on craigslist for a used Speed Triple. Is this a good or bad idea? I would also need to buy protective gear, any thoughts or suggestions? Right now, I am just in the preliminary phases of this process. Thanks for any and all advice.

Cheers,

Welcome to the forum!

Well, it is difficult to say if a Speed Triple is a bad idea or not. If you lack any throttle control I would say no. But if you are able to be respectful of your limitations and the motorcycle's capabilities then maybe it would not be such a bad motorcycle for a first full sized bike. I love my Speed Triple and would gladly recommend it to anyone!

The standards (Bonnevilles and such) are far more neutral in riding position and style and therefore lend themselves to learning skills better (meaning they have better patience for your errors, where a Speed Triple would not).

DEFINITELY take a MSF or equivalent course!!!

What gear you buy is dependent upon your budget, but without a doubt you should get a full faced helmet, jacket with protective pads, protective gloves, and good boots. I try to wear this ensemble every time I get on the motorcycle.

This community is full of great information. A general conversation like the one you have started here would get much more traffic, and therefore responses, in the Biker Hang Out forum. And you can also post in the Speed Triple forum to get opinions there. make yourself at home, browse the forums, and engage the members in conversation!

Hi mitbaile I am a newby to this forum also but not new to bikes, I've owned all shapes and sizes over the years.
I'm currently riding a street triple which I love,it's quick super nimble and most importantly great fun but it's also very forgiving, would make a cracking first big bike
