six speed transmission
Does any know if Triumph is going to put a 6 speed transmission in the Rocket? Hey with gas prices, I personally want a true over drive for 6 gear. I know I would have to downshift to pass quickly on the touring edition, not sure about about the standard, but if I could actually get 45 mpg it would be sweet.
While I am dreaming how about letting me choose which tuning I want for my engine?

I heard second gear that gets the axe in 09'. That way they save on production costs AND warranty claims.

One of my favorite old postings from this board is on the research a Captain did to confirm that the Rocket was intended to have a six speed transmission. There was mention of this in a pre-launch bike review, in late 04-early 05. He found something about the internal shift parts actually having a sixth gear locater in place. My hunch is the addition of a sixth gear might well have placed the top end speed beyond what the mother company felt appropriate.

I support the idea to have the option of selecting an economy tune or a performance tune. There are certainly times when I would gladly trade off access to all 140 hp in exchange for say 50-60mpg. Given the relatively low hwy idle speed of a 5 speed, adding an overdrive 6th gear might have the bike in the 1500 rpm range. A better option might be to suppress the spark to one or two cylinders under light load at stable speed and hopefully double hwy range. About the only way to improve mpg is to add Jardines and PCIII and gain about 20 MPH and was it 4mpg?

OK trumpete (formerly trumPMS) … I’ll take the bait.

If it’s poo you’re trying to stir up, then I guess a forum for a POS like the R3 is a good place to do it. There’s plenty of poo here for the stirring.

I’m curious what you and others think of a poll that so far has tracked 25% of Rocket owners as having experienced tranny/output bearing probs. I’m not talking about the flawed poll on this forum. I mean THIS poll:

http://r3owners.com/viewtopic.php?t=...er=asc&start=0

It seems that most Rocketeers are perfectly fine with those numbers so long as THEIR bike isn’t affected. But it’s pretty hard to write off that poll as sour grapes when it’s been tracking the same issue(s) for over two years.

So let’s put risk in context.

If you are a smoker, the risk of developing lung cancer ranges from between 10% and 15%. About 85% of those victims can directly attribute their cancer to cigarette smoking. That realistically puts the risk at between 8.5% to 12.75%. As a result of that risk, cigarette smoking has been banned from ALL public indoor spaces in the UK. In fact, most of the civilized world has banned cigarette smoking in public restaurants, bars, theaters, and shopping centers. The sale of tobacco products has been completely outlawed in the country of Bhutan. And in Uganda, not only is smoking illegal in all public places, but they are considering extending the law to include private residences.

So, if owning a Rocket puts you at a 25% risk of experiencing transmission problems, I suggest people trade-in their R3 for a carton of Marlboros. Just don't forget to take your checkbook.

Believe what you want, but I believe anything based on any of these forums is not going to be accurate or scientific.

#1. If you are looking for fuel economy from a Rocket III, you are riding the wrong bike. It is the "F350 Duelly" of the motorcycle world.

#2. The number of gears in a transmission have nothing to do with fuel economy.

#3. Yes, 45mpg is dreaming.
