six speed transmission

Does any know if Triumph is going to put a 6 speed transmission in the Rocket? Hey with gas prices, I personally want a true over drive for 6 gear. I know I would have to downshift to pass quickly on the touring edition, not sure about about the standard, but if I could actually get 45 mpg it would be sweet.
While I am dreaming how about letting me choose which tuning I want for my engine?

I heard second gear that gets the axe in 09'. That way they save on production costs AND warranty claims.

One of my favorite old postings from this board is on the research a Captain did to confirm that the Rocket was intended to have a six speed transmission. There was mention of this in a pre-launch bike review, in late 04-early 05. He found something about the internal shift parts actually having a sixth gear locater in place. My hunch is the addition of a sixth gear might well have placed the top end speed beyond what the mother company felt appropriate.

I support the idea to have the option of selecting an economy tune or a performance tune. There are certainly times when I would gladly trade off access to all 140 hp in exchange for say 50-60mpg. Given the relatively low hwy idle speed of a 5 speed, adding an overdrive 6th gear might have the bike in the 1500 rpm range. A better option might be to suppress the spark to one or two cylinders under light load at stable speed and hopefully double hwy range. About the only way to improve mpg is to add Jardines and PCIII and gain about 20 MPH and was it 4mpg?

#1. If you are looking for fuel economy from a Rocket III, you are riding the wrong bike. It is the "F350 Duelly" of the motorcycle world.

#2. The number of gears in a transmission have nothing to do with fuel economy.

#3. Yes, 45mpg is dreaming.

if you want mileage by a scooter

The trade off is an additional 40 miles/tank, personally I would rahter have the enjoyment, when mileage is coming into the equation, a rocket shouldn't even be considered. It is a fun bike and I love the torque in top gear allowing a pass with just a twist, 65-90 in mere seconds.

Gearing matters

The number of gears usually mean a wider range of rpm to wheel revolutions. The fewer times an engine has to turn to spin the wheel will give you better gas mileage. If you do not believe me just do not shift yours into the top gear.

Mileage

MILEAGE SCHMILAGE.. Who cares about mileage when you got that kinda horsepower...If i was going to worry about that i would have bought a common sense motorcycle.. There is nothing common sense about the Rocket..There is plenty of gas stations on the road..Just plan your trip a little more carefully..As for the transmission debate, i am another one you can add to your list that have had the final drive bearing replaced..The transmission clunks going into every gear which is quite painfull..So those of you out there that think we are all whingers just think yourself lucky that you didnt get the problems because i dont care what you say the Rocket gearbox SUCKS ******...But i still love the beast...

transmission

Because 3 different dealers were unable to sort out my tranny issues. The Rock has been shipped to Newnan Georgia where I'm told the rocket design team is going to repair it and hopefully come up with a fix for all who have had this problem. I will keep u all posted as to the progress.
