Fuel consumption

I usually calculate my mileage each time I fill up and it is always between 32-35 mpg. The fuel gauge was a waste of money until the dealer adjusted the tank float for me. After the adjustment though the gauge and low fuel light come on when I have about a gallon left. Now I love the gauge. I really like being able to glance at it while riding and now instantly where I stand. I still reset the trip odometer each time I fill up but the gauge to me (now that it is accurate) is worth the money. I had the tank sender adjusted when I had the bike in for the rear diff recall a while back. The dealer had made their own tool to adjust the float arm by going through the fill hole. They did it for free. I know the manual says the tank is 6.6 gals but I have never had the guts to let it get go longer than having to put about 5.5 gallans in it.

Ken, the Rocket III gas tank has a 6.3 gallon capacity. The current 08 Tourer has a 4.9 or a 5.9 tank depending on which(whose?) specs you read. Has anybody looked in the 08 R3T Owners manual to see what it says the gas tank capacity is???

I just filled up yesterday Milinoman, it coughed making the turn to get to the entrance of the station. I reved it all the way to the pump and made it. I was able to install 6.287 gal. That means I had .713 in the tank if I filled up vertical to the tippy top which I don't. I rode 2up and got stuck on 3 mile bridge with an out of gas vehicle blocking traffic which dropped my mpg to 33.43 from 36. Riding in P'cola has it's moments.

Bob, you are right about that. It looks like you almost did run out of gas. I know that our model has the 6.3 gallon tank, but my main question in my previous post was for the new tourer version (R3T) as it has been seen in print and on the web at both 4.9 and 5.9 gallons. I was just wondering if anyone who has bought the new R3T can look in their owners manual and see what it is listed at there. The tank looks just about the same size as the Standard and Classic Rocket versions.

As a test here's what I did:

1. I tanked up to the recommended max line. And set the trip odometer to zero.

2. Went riding. The light came on at 133 miles.

3. I rode to 151 miles exactly stopping at the gas pump. Filled to the same mark as I did in #1.
That took 4.3 gallons.

151/43 = 35.116 miles per gallon.
Keeping in mind about 95% of that was freeway miles and the weather conditions was roughly in the 80's. Elevation was pretty much at sea level.

So there's my test, as close to accurate as I can produce.
