Duh, the final drive isn't chain driven, it's belt.

Place bike on suitable stand.

Remove rear wheel.

Remove driveshaft and all associated parts forward.

Install front sprocket.

Purchase new rear while with rear sprocket fitted.

Install rear wheel.

Install chain.

Adjust as per instructions contained in any Yamakawasuzuhonda manual.

R3 Chain Replacement/Adjustment

Best read your R3 manual before attempting to mess with the chain. It clearly states that only trained Harley Davidson factory mechanics with proper tools should attempt this procedure. Call, or better yet, visit your local Harley Dealer. They help you!!

Thanks guys for all your advice. I did as you suggested and it runs much better, but wouldn't you know it? as soon as I got the chain adjusted, the rear brake cable snapped!
