My First Gear Magnum textile jacket is definitely NOT waterproof. It works fine in a brief shower. However, several hours of riding in a pouring rain last summer soaked right through the jacket (and everything else I was wearing). My Frogg Toggs were home in the garage as I wasn't anticipating rain on that ride.
Yonder,
The Frogg Togg fabric is definitely breathable AND waterproof. The only drawback to my older Frogg Togg gear is that it wasn't specifically designed for motorcycling so there can be some seepage through the pants pocket access flaps, but I can live with that. I think they have since come out with a motorcycle specific suit. It's worth checking into. You definitely CAN have breathable AND waterproof - and you want that. Frogg Toggs are reasonably priced and they are easily the most popular quality rain gear out there. A cheap Walmart plastic rain suit isn't going to hold up to the wind encountered on a motorcycle. There are other quality alternatives, but in most cases they cost more than Frogg Toggs. The main advantage I've seen in the better stuff is really long leg zippers to ease pulling the pants over riding boots. Getting my size 15 boots through Frogg Togg pants at roadside is a PIA. With a more reasonable boot size, they work fine.
As for leather boots, you need to condition them - and put a lot of conditioner on the seams. You need to do that a couple of times each riding season. Otherwise they will leak. Since this thread has reminded me, I think I'll do mine today.
