Gear Sensor Resistor Mod How-To

Sept 2, 2007 UPDATE:
On PAGE 2, I HAVE POSTED PHOTOS AND DRAWINGS FOR A HOW-TO

I went to Radio Shack to get a 700 ohm resistor. Thought it would be simple. Well they don't have a 700 ohm one, but they do have a 1/2 watt 680 ohm +/- 5%. That would be a range from 646 to 714 ohms, will that do? Then the sales guy there asked what wattage did I need, cause they can come in 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 5 watt...ect. I searched all the past posts on the subject, but never seen anyone post any wattage info.
Anyone know?

you dont say in your post what you need the resistor for. that will determine the specs for the proper part.

resistor

since its probably to fool the intake air sensor into ritchening your mixture, I'll bet a 1/2 watt would be fine.

Sorry fellas, it was included at the top of post where it says: RE-Gear Sensor Mod. This is the mod that gives your ECM the idea that the bike is always in 4th gear. Thus unrestricting the restrictions in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Plus It takes out the top speed limiter. This mod is for people who don't have $500 laying around to be able to purchase a tune-boy.

Oh! I saw the title, but I have never heard of that mod.
I like that. simple, cheap, easy. like me.

Yes, 1/2 watt should be enough for no more load than you will have in that circuit.

Lemme know how it goes.

This may sound naive, but do you always want the ECU to think you're in 4th? It clearly knows what gear you're in. Is this only for how far to open the secondaries?

Follow-Up

I finished the resistor mod and I did make it switchable. Went for a ride with the switch OFF (gear sensor active) just to see if it was running like before the mod. Then carefully, while going slow in 2nd gear, I switched it to ON (680 ohm resistor).

It kept running as if nothing had changed which was a good thing! I was praying that it would'nt just conk-out and coast off the roadway dead. I rode it around for a few more miles thinking next the "check engine light" was going to come on but it didn't...whew!

So I, of course, started seeing if I could feel any power increase from the motor. I tried rolling starts and dead stops and quite honestly I couldn't feel any difference? Front end still will not pull up off the road with WOT in 1st. I can easily make it do that by playing the clutch game though. I switched it back and forth, but could not tell any difference in acceleration . I wasn't expecting a miracle, but I thought I could at least tell when the switch was on. No dice. I know it is hooked up correctly, but it just isn't working out as I had hoped.
