This mod has been done to various other bikes i.e.Hyabusa for the last 8 years and has been proven over and over again.A lot of people have worked hard to figure out these things but you wont find It In a service manual..So don't dare try It because the avarage owner cant afford a dyno run for each experement to prove It to you..It cost me 98 cents and I have 4 restors left over..If you study the service manual you can see how It works..But dont try It cause we have no proof.. I'm not saying it doesn't work, I was questioning the claim that there is a 7% increase. Kind of tough to claim a measured increase without actually measuring it.

Like I said originally, I'm all for backyard mods but I've been doing this a long time with cars, bikes, boats and it just drives me nuts to see someone make a measured claim without baking it up.

I'm not saying there's no increase and I'm not saying don't do it. But to say 7% would be like me claiming that if you take this magic pill, you will see a 13% increase in your libido.

If money for a dyno is a concern, let me know, I'll pitch in for a couple pulls to test this mod out.

Examples like this (Pig9r) and from many other posts on this subject is where the 7% came from:

The Rocket's timing has been retarded in 1st through 3rd gears, 4th and 5th are fully advanced. So by telling the ECU it is in 4th gear while in 1st, 2nd or 3rd you will be able to take advantage of the fully advanced ignition map. I know you would at least get 7% doing so because when I first loaded a modified Tuneboy tune with the secondaries open 100% and ignition maps fully advanced there was a very noticable difference.

Just to clear the air and make it so some members can sleep at night, I have NO idea if its exactly 7% or 6.8% or 7.33333% of an increase, I just know it worked for me. I wasn't trying to write a Service Bulletin on this mod with dyno and torque specs included. I only had spent numerous days collecting info from alot of other members about how to do this and what the expected % of increase would be. I kept seeing the same figure pop up over and over which was 7%. I have never dyno'd the bike and most likely never will until way after my warantee is up. Do the research as I did by searching posts for 5 days straight at 5 different web sites, and you'll see where that .07%(9.5 HP gain) came from.

I don't know about the timing bit. Wayne from Tuneboy has changed the timing for some of his exhaust/intake configurations. I asked him why he didn't do it for the TOR's/cat bypass with standard intake and he said he did do it but it didn't work.

I dynoed my bike with a standard Triumph tune that partially closes the secondaries. There is a big dip in torque between about 2300 and 3300 rpm. The dip is about at 137 lb ft. The peak torque is actually at about 144 at 4000 rpm. However, when I ran one of Tuneboy's custom tunes that open the secondaries 100% all the time, the peak torque went up to 150 lb ft at about 2700 rpm. So what's the real difference? I say it's between 137 and 150.

If you don't have a stock map like 20150 or 20145 or 20143 that has the 2ndaries open 100% in 4th at all rpms, this mod won't work.

Doug- don't forget that that there are different ignition maps for each gear and that one for 3rd - 5th (I4) is more advanced than the 1st and 2nd maps. So if the ECU thinks it is in 4th gear it would have the same effect as copying the I4 map to I2 and I3.

Sounds about right. Doesn't sound like a good idea.
