Exhaust Flange Covers

Finally broke down and bought the flange covers , a simple twenty minute job turned into a five hour nightmere. Metric & Standard tools, I started backing off the cap nuts on the exhaust...they all came off pretty easily except one, while backing it out the nut stayed on while the whole bolt came out and it was cross threaded to boot, this is the original exhaust. The nut would not come off,i ended up grinding it down to the threads and still no luck. I tried everything. I ended up cutting it off from the bolt to allow it to pass threw the exhaust hole. Now I'm trying to put in a new threaded bolt into the block, the thing was striped enough that i had to re thread it. Ok all I had to do is move the exhaust and tap a new thread, used the proper tools to back out the chrome exhaust covers ,they wouldn't budge..!I ended up striping the cover fasiners and had to drill them out also.I ended up loosening the exhaust nuts under the pipes enough to slide the exhaust out so i could tap it properly and making sure the air sensor?? wasn't compromised. Finally getting it threaded and putting in the new bolt,I ended up replacing the cap nut with a stainless steal one.It doesn't take much to strip the faciner(nuts), IMO they seem pretty sub standard....!

Sorry to hear about your troubles.......no accessory is easy.....they all require pain and torture some more than others.

I took off my exhaust recently to get to the hot wire that leads to the starter. After reinstalling I was going to take them back off because I didn't get the header fit properly to the catbox. I ended up with the same problem as you did....nut stuck to the bolt and the bolt started to twist out. I just torqued it back down and decided to live with a slight exhaust leak at the header/catbox junction

I am pretty sure I caused the problem by torquing the header nuts down too hard......I think to 26 fig newtons rather than the 19 fig newtons called for in the manual.

Whether or not they are substandard I don't know.....I do know my wrenching is substandard.

The problem is some of the fasiners nut heads need to be deeper. With the addition of lock tight it takes alot of torqung to break some of them free.I had the same problem with the heal toe shifter, when i took it apart to adjust the hight of the heal shift, the head of the bolt rounded out inside,I replaced it with a stainless steal hex head bolt. One good thing I'm getting pretty good at drilling and tapping out bolt heads...lol. The Rivco floor boards were a great addition to the bike, but a little fileing and grinding was nessasary to make them fit.At $70-$80 an hour labor I'll live with the pain and torture...!
