I would appreciate a response from rocket riders that have had the out-put shaft bearing repaired.

When it was repaired was there any thought given by Triumph or your dealer about the oil being contaminated by metal shavings and causing future damage to the engine. I have been assured by Triumph & dealer mechanics that the screens & filter system should have collected all the shrapnel before it made it's way into the engine.

So my question is did they only repair the bearing and flush the system or did they go beyond that ????

I am not sure exactly what you are asking, but they tore my whole bike apart, I have some great photos of my engine in a million pieces. They looked at everything because I had pieces of bearing all over the place. The mechanic told me the screens at all the major locations had stopped the material from damaging the engine. I had a nice little pile of rubble to look at.

Jeep,

I had the output shaft bearing replaced at 3500+ miles.
My dealer pulled the pan to make sure that no metal shavings were found in the pan.
With 7000 miles on the oil already, what would be the harm to change it while the engine is all apart and in the shop?

I think SOP when you break an engine down, is to change the oil before sending it out the door.

I'd insist on having it changed, covered by warranty.

My 2 cents worth.
Good luck.

Thanks but it's not the oil being replaced that I am concerned about.

Did Triumph do any extra work on your engine besides the basic work of replacing the bearing the oil and flushing the system to ensure no metal shavings.

For example inspect the engine itself to see if there could have been any other damage (cylinder walls etc) that could cause a issue miles down the road?
Thanks

jeep,

My dealer broke the engine down.
Inspected the pan, cleaned the screens and filters.

I do not know if he completely broke the engine down as shown above.
Sorry.

hlw3 those photos are impressive. Sounds like you have a decent dealer. I would love to see some more of those photos.

Is the output shaft bearing something you have to ask to have changed, or do you have to wait until it becomes a problem?

Does anyone know if Triumph has addressed the output shaft problems in either the '06 or '07 models? Or is this still an issue with all years and not just the '05's?

Thanks

For what it is worth someone on r3owners.net said it was a limited amount that have the issue and that it was because the bearing was installed backward and that Triumph is handling it as a warranty issue.

It is not just the '05s. Trey's bike is an '06 Classic. As I understand it he also had the 2nd gear issue some of the '06s have had.
As far as what year bike has what issues, it seems to be just a luck of the draw sort of thing. I have a First 200 and have had no output bearing issues in 21K miles, but the early bike sold immediately after mine was lemon lawed in under 2K miles.
Some early ('04) R3s had output bearing failures. Some '05s and '06s did too. Some '04s had cam drive failures. Many '05s and '06s had major idle/stalling issues the '04 Rockets didn't. The '06s have had weak spring and gear issues with the tranny.
Further complicating things is that there is at least anecdotal evidence and personal observation that Triumph is titling '05s as '06s, so you don't really know what you're getting unless you check actual build date. Without knowing build date, you don't know if the bike has the updated torsion shaft bearings, cam drive gear, clutch shaft, detent spring, or 2nd gear. Like I said, it's just a cr*p shoot at this point.
