Is this windshield worth $500? Is there an alternative that is about the same height (or at least adjustable to around that height)?

You can get a Clearviewshields.com screen for $130 but you need the Triumph screen hardware that you can only get with a Triumph screen. Maybe you can get the hardware or hardware plus second hand screen on e-bay or one of these fora. The advantage of the Clearview is that it's wider and you can order it up to 5" higher.

I recently bought the Roadster screen and the answer to your question is.... That depends upon what you consider 'worth it'

Here's what I like and don't like about it and then you can decide for yourself...

I Like...
(1) the ruggedness of the mounting.
the mount for the screen is very stout and doesn't flex very much at high speed (80-90 mph)
(2) the ease of assembly
I put the screen on myself and it was very straightforward.
(3) it looks good
Many of the 'generic' screen that would 'fit' the R3 were garbage. I made a $100 mistake buying a 'generic' screen that would have taken a lot of 'modifying' to make it work.

I don't like...
(1) the height
I have it mount and adjusted as high as it goes the wind hits me dead in the face. I'm 5'10". It would be next to impossible to ride in an open-face or half helmet... full-face only
(2) the removal
If you want to take the screen off for the day, it's a pain in the #$@. It has to be disassembled to get off, there's no 'easy' way. Some aftermarket screens like Memphis Shades provide very easy ways to quickly remove the screen.

The prices of wind screens are pretty consistent between $500-600 dollars for a good quality screen. Choices for the R3 are pretty limited.

There have been several postings about alternative screens to the factory model. Search the R3 forum and you'll find links to vendors.

The least expensive vendor that I found was ClearView

I have the roadster windscreen that triumph makes. I put 11,000 miles on my bike this summer on a 36 day road trip. I put the windscreen on the day before I left for safety, and as soon as I got on the road I was totally miserable. I am 6'4" tall and my head was right in the buffet zone, the area of wind that is very non-smooth, non-laminar. I contemplated taking the screen off and shipping it back home several times because riding in the wind was so much nicer. It made the trip very hard because I had to ride in an uncomfortable position to minimize the effects on my vision and neck due to the shaking of my head.

As soon as I got home, I quickly removed the four bolts holding it on, and it was off in a flash. I think if a person wanted to be able to put it on and take it off, it would be no big deal, it wasn't hard for me, four little bolts.

I would love to have the protection that the windscreen provides against some rocks, bugs and other debris, but I was so miserable.

I do think the windscreen looks nice on the bike, but it is too short for me.

Get a Clearview. You can add up to 5" to the standard height. The Triumph lower air deflectors also reduce turbulence around your head.

Agree. I'm 6'1" and the Roadster is just barely tall enough for me; moreover, his description of headshake strongly suggests updraft buffeting is involved. Over-top wind can be noisy & unpleasant but does not all by itself cause that low-frequency shaking which blurs vision and gives headaches--at least not IME. If updraft is part of the problem the fork deflectors are the solution.

I have the Roadster screen and love it, thats only because I also have the Triumph lowers. With the lowers on there is almost no buffeting, heres a picture. By the way I'm 5'10"

I don't have the lowers yet, but do have the Roadster screen and it's been great this winter so far. I don't like the looks of any big windscreen, but when temps start dropping to the 40s or below, or I'm going on a long trip, I'm thankful to have it!

I have no problem swapping with the fly screen either. Four bolts, and it's off. Not as easy as a Road King or similar, but the windshield comes off in a matter of minutes.

Is it worth $500? It's a big piece of plexiglass with a Triumph sticker on it. They could have at least etched Triumph in instead of putting a clear sticker on it for that price. I am 5'11" also, and do catch some of the buffeting, which I believe the lowers would fix, but it's not terrible. I did a 4,000 mile road trip this summer with the Roadster screen and survived...

I have the roadster screen and am 5' 8". I find it too low for the degree of comfort that I like in cold weather. The mounting system is very solid, so I will be replacing the plastic screen with a taller one from Clearview.

Hey Molinoman,I had the same complaint and have been looking for some time now for an alternateve but havn't seen anything out there that offers the protection the readster screen offers with lowers.Yes even here in the Sunshine state it gets cool and I ride year round so I got one from a forum member at a discount.
