Hello Everyone,
I have had my R3 for several months and love the beast. I have looked here a couple of times before. I came back now to learn about exhaust changes and what can be done to reduce the heat. Now I seem to see that the R3 is having some tech problems. I see quite a bit about idle problems, I have had it stall once in a slow corner. This doesn't scare me as much as a post about transmission bearings. Yikes! I hate to bring these things up in my first post but this scares the bejeebers out of me. I don't put a lot of miles on a bike and I'm worried warranty will expire and I'll have a major breakdown. I thought the R3 was built like a tank. Thanks for any help with my concerns. I'll be talking to you all more for sure.
Thanks Mike

I think most are built like a tank.. I bought my '04 model as a demo this past New Years weekend with 123 miles on it. I've put over 15,000 trouble free miles on it this year so far.

I currently run the Triumph Off-Road mufflers with the cat delete kit and a Power Commander with the correct mapping and have no problems. The only idle issue I've had was in an unusual length of idle time (trying to get through down town Sturgis) on a very hot day.

As far as the shifting, mine was very clunky and at first, but has smoothed out considerably as I've put more miles on the bike.

Dave,
Thanks for the reply. I know with everything, someone will have a problem. All in all what I have read everyone is happy with the R3. I saw a message about wanting Triumph to recall a transmission bearing problem. I might have read the post on another forum, and I think it was a new post with no replies. I don't know if I can find it again. The dealer said the trans smoothes out after some time. I'll keep looking around here, I have read about so many things I have never heard of before. Power Commanders, tuneboys and lots more.
Thanks Mike

Judging by the other bikes you own, you would have no need for a Power Commander or TuneBoy.. Both are available for many bikes with fuel injection.

I've read about the transmission bearings also, but I have not had any bad experiences in that area and I know two other Rocket riders who have alot of miles on theirs and they seem to be just fine too.

One DOES have the idle problem though. He is currently running the Jardine exhaust system with the Triumph mapping for the TORs / cat-delete. He does not have the Power Commander or Tuneboy installed. He has had it at the dealer ( a very good dealer ) several times and they have not been able to resolve the idle problem yet. It never seems to have the problem when he brings it to the dealer.. hahaha.. so they can't duplicate what he's experiencing..

To avoid worrying about the Rocket, or any bike for that matter....stay off the net!... :-D

37,000 miles on my Rocket with no problems.....most reliable bike I have ever owned.

Dave,
I don't even know what they are yet, but I'm not sure why you say I won't need a power commander or tuneboy. Is it because they are performance items and the other bikes I have are so slow?

Does the removal of the cat box help reduce engine heat?
If you install Jardine or another after market exhaust will it affect the warranty?

I didn't mean to say you wouldn't need/want one for the Rocket III.. I was refering to the other bikes you own.. Sorry about the confusion..

The Power Commander and TuneBoy are used to modify fuel maps on fuel injected bikes. Kind of like re-jetting a carburetor, except it's all computer controlled.

The removal of the cat box does not reduce engine heat that I have noticed, and I don't think installing aftermarket exhaust systems voids the warranty. That would affect alot of bikes from every manufacturer!

I don't think so. The big engine puts out a lot of heat. Nothing you can do about it. Your main problem is Florida.

Mike B. you don't happen to work at SFWMD, do you? My wife works there and has seen a new black R3 parked there.

No, that isn't where I work. That's rather observant of you to notice that we are neighbors. I do have a black R3. Send me an e-mail.
