I realize i haven't posted anymore info or pictures on my repair on my Rocket. I had a slight mishap putting the motor back together and getting the replacement part has proved to be a very daughting (?) task. The tranny repair went flawlessly and so did putting the case halves back together. My mistake was in reinstalling a bearing support cap that helps clamp down a roller bearing on the transmission output/countershaft. The caged roller bearings (3 of them) on the transmission shaft have anti-rotation pins on the outer race that keeps the race from turning in the cases. The cases have indentations that these pins set in when the countershaft is installed in the upper case half, pretty much fool proof. But the end bearing is free to rotate untill the lower case half is installed and clamped in with a cast cap similar to a Chevy rod end cap. I didn't realize the bearing had turned, facing the pin away from the case half and installed the cap. ( The indentation is in the cap itself) It's not right in your face so it can be easily missed. Needless to say, it broke the cast aluminum cap in half when i tightened it.. ssd: The pin on the bearing acted like a wedge and caused a clean break. The Factory says i have to buy a complete set of cases because the cap is not available by separately. Line bored my arse! Dink at D&D in NW Florida is trying to get one off a warranty or tranning engine they use at the factory. Having it welded is another option since it was a clean break. This really bites!!! I haven't been able to ride my Rocket since after Memorial day weekend. Thank God for my Trophy 4! Once again...i will keep everyone posted. Bigern

I remain in awe of your technical capabilities. Stuff happens, unfortunately in this case to a part that isn't readily available.

Actually, i was having a ball till i broke that darn cap. Well, maybe not that much fun...i'd rather be riding her. I haven't figured up how much labor cost would've been saved, but figure up...
7 hours to remove the engine
3 hours to tear down the motor
2 hours to repair the transmission
3 hours scraping gaskets
4 hours to put the motor back together (estimated)
8-10 hours to put the motor back in (estimated)

Not to mention the factory tools i had to buy just to get the motor out of the frame, and disassemble the motor. Parts to repair the transmission and a gasket set.

Saving money was not the main reason for doing it this way. When it comes to motorcycles, i am a firm believer in the "Do it yourself and learn" atittude. Also that way, if something goes wrong or is left loose, i have no one to blame but myself. I just feel better knowing more about the machine under me while cruising down the interstate at 80 mph.

Thanks for all the support and lack of finger pointing and laughing ;-) Bigern

You don't need that cap... just put it together without it :-D

I'll bet you never turn that bearing again... will ya?

(You just knew some butthead would come on here and start throwing wrenches at ya, didn't ya? I'm surprised Wilbur hasn't jumped your case...)

:-D :-D :-D
