I ride with Roy and his wife. We belong to the Colorado High Country Cruisers and they are extremely lucky they didn't get hurt. The Valk is totaled but the good news is I really think he likes the R3 Classic, maybe a convert.....

A friend of mine has tried the same. He says:- Hit the animal, don´t try to avoid it, Your chances are a lot better then.

Wouldn´t aim for a moose though...

Oh, you mean that Cherry Red/New England White Rocket Classic that's sitting in my garage... :-D

Guys, that was quite a ride and a day hasn't gone by since the 'incident' that I don't think about how thankful I am that we made it through without a scratch.

It was really sad to get the final word that the Valk would not be repaired, but I DO NOW have a new Rocket III Classic sitting in the garage and have managed about 200 miles on her since picking her up. What a ride!!!

Hey Roy, Very glad you came to no harm in that incident. A friend of mine sent me an e-mail with the link to your site. When I posted it here, I had no idea that you would be a new Rocket Captain! Glad to have you!

Welcome Roy!

Welcome your comparison of the Valk to the Rocket after a few miles.

Roy, I guess this demonstrates one thing... if you're going to hit a deer (kangaroo in Australia or sheep in NZ) make sure you are riding a heavyweight motorcycle and that your riding skills are up to scratch. You scored on both points and you lived to ride another day. It even looks like with a bit of a hose down and a cup'o'coffe to settle the nerves, you could have continued on until dark.

Glad you and your wife emerged unscathed, Davo

Out of all the risks of motorcycling, the deer risk is the one I dread the most...by far....and the circumstances of this crash make the risk even more disturbing.....hitting a deer without ever seeing it. Scary business indeed!

In the past week I have had to brake hard for deer three times....twice on my Rocket and once in my car (today). Last January I hit a deer with a new car I had bought in December.

Lawrence Grodsky, the safety writer for Rider magazine was killed last April when he hit a deer. He was probably as skilled a rider, in terms of safety, as anyone out there but it wasn't enough.

I used to think avoiding early am and night riding would reduce the risk since they seem to be more active at those times. But my last three enounters all occurred in broad daylight.

A heavy stable bike does seem to help. I can't imagine a sport bike dragging that deer so far...

That used to be one beautiful Valk....!
