Bear and I went with some friends to their family reunion in Lamapas this weekend. They drove their truck. We rode the bikes. Bear rode The Boss and I of course rode my Rocket.

Not long after arrival two men and three boys went running to check out the bikes. We went on inside. One of the boys probably about 12 years old came over and asked some pretty intelligent questions about the Boss Hoss. Then decided to ask me about my Rocket. First question out of his mouth.....Does Triumph still make motorcycles? Second question is your bike new or old. With great emphasis on OLD!

The kid's funeral is this Wednesday...............................

Ok I can dream.........

Hey.. the kid was informed enough to realize that Triumph is not a "new" name in motorcycling. That is great!

I pulled up to the gate here at Lackland last week and an Airman security police, probably around 19 or 20, was checking IDs at the gate. I pull up on my bike and he asks " Triumph? who makes that? " and I briefly explain to him that Triumph is a long running British motorcycle company.

I guess it could get confusing if you don't know who Triumph is with Yamaha now producing motorcycles under the "Star" name (seems hokey to me, but people buy them) and other Suzuki now calling their cruisers "Boulevard"..

i travelled to atlanta by plane last week for a family reunion...11 siblings getting together for second oldest 80th birthday...i wore my black TRIUMPH T shirt on the plane...i see guys with HD shirts all the time (readily available at the HD Boutiques all over Dallas...they also sell motorcycles)...anyway, no less than 3 guys commented on the fact that they rode Triumphs in the 60s and 70s...i tell them that my brother Larry had one in the 50s (i was 14 and never forgot how fast that sucker was...he had a 48 Harley and his two buddies had BSA's..couldn't keep up...he sold his Harley, bought the Triumph, and outran them every time)...i then tell them about the Rocket and if they haven't seen one, go to the Triumph site and check it out...their eyes get wide when i mention "2300ccs"

Their eyes may getting wide just trying to do the math - I'll tell them its over 140 cubes and just as many HP and that always gets the point across!

Ok so we have all heard the "do they still make bikes" thing....but is your bike an OLD bike? That is when I decided I was done with the conversation with this kid....

This happened a few weeks ago:

I stopped for gas and there where a few Harleys there already and this old man was admiring the bikes. When he saw the Rocket he forgot about the Harleys and started to talk to me. You all know the questions:
-Do Triumph still produce motorcycles?
-How many cc did you say?
..and so on.

He then started to talk about his first Triumph and how his father also had one. I like those stories and he had a few nice memories to share of times long gone.

The HD riders didn’t like to be forgotten and started to compete about his attention with comments like “HD has always been the king of motorcycles since day one!” and “Nothing can compare with a Harley no matter how big it is!”

The old man ignored them and kept talking about old Triumphs.

Then someone said, “HD is the oldest manufacturer of bikes still producing!”

I corrected him and told him that the first Triumph was built 1902 and therefore was older. (OK, I know that the first all-Triumph with a Triumph engine was not build until 1905, but I somehow felt that there was no point in sharing that information).

This was taken for a joke and they all started to laugh at me who obviously didn’t know anything about motorcycles. A proof of that was that I had to buy a 2300cc bike only to impress on people that did not know anything about motorcycles either.

I did not get mad or anything, but I felt it was enough. I went inside and paid for the gas and both the old man and the idiots was gone when I got out again.

I have nothing against Harleys, I have had a –47 “warrior” and a –62 Panhead for many years, but I feel that the world don’t need another fat old man on a V-twin and there are to many idiots riding Harley already, so they can probably manage without me. Harleys do not impress me anymore and after meeting HD owners (I won’t call them “bikers”) like those, I can’t imagine that I would ever get a HD again.

Ain't it funny when Harley wanta-be riders are getting their butts chapped by new technology, they always have to bring out the "Oldest manufacture of motorcycles) excuse.

Since it's written on both sides of the bike, I'm perplexed when people ask how big it is. Maybe they think the "2300 cc" refers to something else.

They are too busy staring at the motor! It's kinda like looking at the worlds ugliest dog....You are so mesmerized by it's face, you don't notice if it's male or female! :-D
