My neutral light goes out sometimes & the bike's not in gear. I've gotten to the point at takeoff to "feel" for gear connection with the clutch (assuring the neutral light is out) to see if I have engagement. If not, I tap the lever again & hear the gears mesh almost every 2nd try. Then I'm assured I'm in. About 3/4 of the time, 1st gear connects & most of the time, very quietly. Other times, I'm not so sure the gearbox is going to standup very long.

Yes,1st is a funny animal on mine also,is it or isn't it,only the clutch knows for sure.Moving forward or rearward solves the question of getting it in for me so far.I've noticed when shagging butt,I sometimes discover that I didn't completely engage the gear, completing it the next shift attempt.Don't know what that's about. :???:

I believe the engagement issue from neutral to first is more common on shaft drive bikes because the gears aren't as free to move as on a chain drive. My salesman instructed me to feather the clutch then hit the shifter again and I've never had a problem. I now have 7000 miles on her, and she shifts as smooth as silk.
