Anybody ever have a oil leak from where the oil tank meets the rest of the engine? I can see (with flashlight) oil coming from the small spot where the oil tank has the return or supply down into the engine.
This causes oil (very slow) to leak down the left side of the engine cover.
I have 800 miles on the bike and I am getting ready to leave on 11,000 mile trip in June, bummer time to have to rip things apart...
I am going to call dealer, but just wondering what you guys and gals have seen.

Thanks!

Trey,

my local dealer had to pull my engine out for gearbox strip down and I picked it up the following week... all seemed fine until I got home [55 mile ride] and found major leak from under the oil tank ~ I reckon if I went any further it could have caught fire with oil on exhaust, or major smash with oil all over the back wheel/tyre.

Cutting a long story short - dealer took it back and found one of the two 'O' rings got pinched during reassembly, apparently it's a right***** to get the tank back in place. No damage done but advise you get your dealer to check it before you go on your trip.

That is very common. It is some cosmoline that is sprayed on the bike at the factory prior to crating to protect the bikes surfaces from corrosion during shipping. Some of the areas back behind the oil tank especially are hard to get when the bike is prepped. When the bike heats up it gets thinner and runs down the engine. After a few more miles it will be gone. Should look something like this...

This photo came from a Japanese Rocket site.

That is what I thought it was at first, but after very close inspectioin, I can actually see drops of oil at the back of the oil tank on the bottom where the interface is to the engine...this stuff is clear to light brown, and I thought the cosmoline was blueish???

I would have the dealer look at it... but it may very well be just cosmoline. Mine did the exact same thing and the cosmoline tends to pick up road grime and appear like a dark oily mess. After a while (and after several though washings) it stopped. Oil leaks don't ever stop, they just get worse :-D

Why Triumph has to hose these bikes down with cosmoline is beyond me... I would think they wouldn't be in the crate for years to come..
