Heard a whisper today the Sunstate Motorcycles, my local Triumph dealer has a D675 and are allowing rides. Thats all I needed so jumped in the ute and headed down there. Sure enough, a red D675 was ready and waiting. This bike in red has the same wow factor as the original 916 Ducati... got sex written all over it! Just sitting there on the showroom floor, I had to ask for a tissue as the saliva puddle at my feet grew larger by the second. I was worse that one of those big dogs with their drippy jowls eh!
After the mandatory photocopying-of-the-license and signing of-the-form-ceremony was complete, we head off with old mate salesman on the shop speed triple. Pulling out onto the backstreet, a little bit of throttle and a little bit of attitude and I'm hooked. This bike boogies from way down low and as the revs start to hook in, it makes a sound that would summon Lazarus from the dead. Like a Ferrari on full song... totally addictive and utterly beautiful.
I was starting to fall in love already. Three or four sets of lights later, we get a clear run off the lights so shes full bore in first. Seems like I mighta used second as we're going a long ways, the fronts up maybe a foot and we haven't hit a rev limiter. I then realise this thing likes to rev and right now we must be pulling 12 or 13 thou and we're fast catching the last batch of cars so hook her up one and ease back. besides, we were having so much fun we didn't check around for cops! oops!
As we cruise along I hook her all the way up into top, we're in traffic and probably doing around 70 or 80kph with around 4000rpm showing. Knowing that the current crop of Japanese 600s are as limp wristed as a poofter who's just shot he's bolt :-D I decide to whack the throttle open, just to see what happens. Amazed and gob smacked. The little Daytona bolted like a hairy rabbit with no 'turbo lag' or hesitation of any sort. It's looking good I thought as we headed out onto the highway. When we got back to the shop, old mate on the 1050 Speed Triple told me that every time I gassed it along to 160-180 or so, he had to fish around in his gearbox and even then could barely keep with the 675! I found the ride and bump absorption quite good, the handling simply sublime, no vibration that I could notice and that sound... simply awesome, and that was with the stock pipe in place.
Was I impressed, is the pope a catholic? My only issue, weight on the wrists but if the bike is used as intended, this is no problem however if one wants to tool around the street, then a set of Heli Risers would work well I guess.
So to make this a legitimate Rocket post, I would have to say that the D675 would make the perfect partner to the Rocket III as your second bike. Then again, maybe a threesome including KTM 990 Adventure would be the ticket.
We are just so spoiled for choice these days it ain't funny. Davo
