Tank Pad

Anyone have this?

I'm wondering if there are problems with dust getting under it and scratching the tank.

I have one and I know ToystoreTom has one also. I have noticed some rub marks when I move it from side to side to wash, which I am disappointed to see. However, I use the pocket very much (I'm in the military and use it to hold my wallet for I.D. checks) and I do like the way it looks on the bike.

I haven't had a chance to remove it since I put it on a month or so ago, but I know there are rub marks under each side of the pad...

Don't have it, but doubt any permanent marring of the tank will occur from ordinary dust.

Over the years I've broken all rules that make the truly paint-anal pucker, including the use of tank bags in dusty unpaved conditions on Japanese bikes with crappy paint that chips if you look at it cockeyed.

I've never had real scratches occur from a properly-made tank accessory properly affixed. Some scuffing may occur but IME it's the superficial kind that can be polished out with a little TLC

I'v ebeen looking at this too, how does it install? and is it easily removed for cleaning?

pictures? I've never seen one not installed or in person yet.

As Dave said... I have one...

When I first recieved it, it was folded in half in a plastic bag and it had a crease along the fold line because of that. It finally went away after about 6 months... probably because it sat out in the sun.

It has tie straps... they are almost like leather shoe strings. I got rid of the bottom ones and used black electrical ties. I did use the top ones. I have it very tight against the tank.

It has left a small smudge in the clearcoat but I can easily rub that out with a little rubbing compound or cleaner wax. I think because I have it on tight it doesn't move around very much therefore it doesn't mess with the paint.

I keep a small padlock in the pouch... I use this padlock to lock my helmet to the brake lever.

If I get a chance I'll take a pic of it this weekend.. I've been so busy, I'm kinda like a one legged man at a sh!t kicking contest. :razz: I really kinda like it, it looks good on a black bike... not sure if I've ever seen one on any other color...

My two cents!! ... If you are going to use a tank cover/pad, leather or otherwise... Get some of that clear sticky and cut a strip the shape of your cover/pad. Use a hairdryer to help stick it on your 'clean' tank surface so no air bubbles... Then when the tank pad or cover is on and dust gets under, ther won't be any surface scratching!

Steve's on the right track here. I have a tank cover and some some clear contact underneath it. Works well and when I sell the bike (if I ever do!), I can easily remove the clear contact. davo

Another possible option, one I used on a trip up the left coast, is to use a smaller magnetic bag on the rear bumper, where the passenger seat would have been. If any rubbing does occur it's less noticable. Of course, it's a smaller bag and it eliminates being able to take a passenger.
