I just saw a 2006 RIII with the new black engine. Not only is the engine all black but so is the valve cover. In my opinion it doesn't even look like an engine anymore. The only way to describe it would be to compare it to when you go through a model home and all the TV's and Computers in the house are plastic Props. They are not real looking and that is the same feeling I get looking at the black engine. It does not pop out and say " Hey I'm 2300cc's" . I thought I would like it but it hides the engine and as intimidating as a brick wall. Maybe the classic will at least have a chrome valve cover!

Sadly agree. Chrome valve cover now an extra cost option, at least in Europe, though. Wish Triumph had kept the whole engine "organic", i.e. aluminium gray, and make black paint THE extra cost option. Suppose there would not be many takers for it...

I think the chrome cover is available as extra on the standard bikes

concur. why hide the monstrous engine. I love the fact that the gray hulk of metal cradled in the frame just screams out 2300 cc, or 140 cubic inches - take your pick.

some writers initially termed the massive engine "agricultural" looking, or unrefined. . .hell yes, it's unrefined - in appearance, but not performance.

I love it when H-D folks, in particular, so long extolling the virtues of their 88s, now look in awe or anger at the Rocket's hulking engine and imposing appearance.

ride on

When I first saw the blacked out engine, I thought "That's what I have to have!" But after running across my '05 and riding it a while, I'm glad I have the silver motor. My past few bikes have had blacked out motors, which I still like, but this motor should be silver/grey/aluminum, which ever color it's called..

The salesman at my dealer stated that the silver engine is also still available by order/request. I remember similar responses from people about the engine when the rocket first came out. Some couldn't understand why it was silver because it made it stand out so much. I think, like with anything different, it will just take some getting used to. It's what's on the inside that counts right? :-D Of course I could be bias.

Apologies for not opting in for the hundreds of dollars cost on a single chrome part, looks shabby but cost vs benefit.

Guys guys guys! :knkknk:

Lets put on our wigs and lipstick for a moment and just imagine the Triumph design team presenting the black engine with all the usual chrome accouterments(minus the valve cover) to the esteemed group of Gentlemen and Ladies in charge of such decisions.

I'm going to have to swim upstream and say how beautifully evil the black and chrome looks. As I'm sure they did too!

i didnt like the black motor..so i purchased the 2005 model that was left over, i like the chrome tappet cover and keeping the silver motor clean i thought would be easier in the long run....the black is obviously a cost cutting excercise...but i heard you can still order the silver motor in 2006
