I'm going to be taking a test ride tomorrow and if all goes well, will be trading a bike in on a new black RIII.

Did a search and didn't find anything (good news!?) regarding the amount of heat coming of the engine when sitting in traffic. Not a problem this time of year, but come summer it might be.

Any comments?

Also, anything a newbie should know for the test ride?

Thanks,

Jim

Get the Rivco exhaust flanges, heat will be turned down.

My cheap synthetic suit pants melt next to the engine when stopped in traffic.

Now I never take the girl through traffic if possible.

crisp summer sun that burns instantly is about the same sort of temperature. Put some decent thickness between you and the big girl and its all sorted.

Rivco parts - the ones that cover the headers to the pipe covers?

Will jeans be enough thickness?

Fortunately, there's less traffic in the summer......... my brother has a vtx that's got a pretty good chunk of engine and it's not too bad even with the radiator fan going. Visually this engine looks much bigger than the difference in displacement though .

I can see there's going to be a few things that need to be tweaked (license plate location etc). The bike I'm looking at has (I beilieve) factory performance pipes put on by the dealer .....look stock but I assume better breathing and they have no cat. Will the stock ecm handle the difference or will I end up with a power commander or similar?

Thanks for your help.

Wait for the Tuneboy to be finished,it should be a lot better than the power commander.
I have ridden the bike in plus 40deg c temps and my shoulders got hotter than my right leg.I have not had any real probs with heat from the bike.

Very hot. Very, very hot. But at least you'll be sweating from the humidity.

I'm curious as to the new black engines, hotter then regular?

the engine in my sprint is black as well but I know when you paint/chrome an engine it doesn't dissapate heat as well.

any logic to the new color or is it just stylish? it has me concerned that I should get an earlier model

The 05 engine is painted gray. The 06 black engine will get rid of heat somewhat better. Black has a higher emissivity than the gray/silver paint. To qualify this, we are not talking much difference.

I find that the heat is just one of the bug-bears or little idiosyncrasies with the R3. It has been a hot summer over hear in OZ and unless you are free wheeling you really notice the heat at low speeds or stuck at lights etc. I have all the Rivco gear on but I still notice the heat coming up off the motor especially on the inside of my right leg... I wear Kevlar reinforced jeans in summer... It is never really a PROBLEM problem but it has had me thinking that there must be a better way to deflect all that engine heat. Bonus is that it is welcome in winter
