My new Rocket has the small pillion seat pad fitted to it so I thought I'd take it off to see if I like the bike with just one seat.
Imagine my mild consternation when I discovered one of the rivets underneath the seat pad between the rubbers had not been fitted correctly and was not fully in.
Not a problem unless someone has sat one the seat. Now there is a corresponding ring of damage to the paint on the rear mudguard.
Worth checking yours out..
To disguise it I have had to put the seat back on until I go to the dealer.
Also they are unaware of this noise on a Rocket. I can't get to the dealer for a while and am worried.
If anyone has ever heard an old car with a worn camshaft that's the noise I get at @ 2500 RPM in 1st and 2nd when accelerating through that rev range. I can't get it to happen at any other time or any other load conditions and wonder if it's something to do with the dual throttle valves. The noise is over so quick I can't work out where it's coming from as I'm too busy holding on !!
The fact that it only happens at a certain rpm under a load probably means that something is resonationg as opposed to a loose or defective mechanical component ( even though it sounds like a cam noise). Being under a load may amplify the vibration to the point that you can hear the noise. You may be able to duplicate it by sharply cracking the throttle open in neutral and listening carefully. The noise may not be as loud but it might show up. If you experiment with the throttle you might be able to duplicate the noise.
Another thing you might try is put packing around the fan shrounds (stuff rags in there or use some tape) and see if that kills the noise... there have been some posts on that. You might also lift the gas tank and see if the prop wand is secure... anything loose or out of place under there... is the bear claw on tight....That sort of thing. Are the side covers secure? In other words... just take a step back and look over the whole bike. If you suspect something you can pack it up or remove it and see if the sound goes away.
Yep I have a dent and associated scraping mark dead centre top of guard and four ring marks from rubber stoppers that will not cut or polish off and my dealers has requested a new rear guard under warranty but he is worried that when we fit the new one we will have to beef up the curved bracket and or raise it at the mount stiffening up the passenger ride even more and he is going to sell me small sheets of plastic tank guard incase the stoppers hit again.I am not happy as my missus only weighs 50kgs (110lbs) this is obviously a design fault, and has anyone else looked under their rear seat pad lately and what is the next guard going to cost me when it happens again?????? :???:
Does the noise happen when the motor is cold?
My Rocket makes horrible noises when the engine is not up to operating temperature. Most noticeably in that 2000 - 2800 rpm range.
The noise goes away as the bike warms up.

It appears to be there all the time. I'm not sure if it's mechanical or just a resonant sound inside when the motor starts to pull. There's a kind of distant hard knocking noise which only happens if I increase the throttle in that range, I can slowly ease the revs up and it will not happen but by increasing the acceleration rate I can get it to occur.
I'm going to the dealer on Saturday so I fully expect it to NOT happen when I get there.
In 3rd 4th and 5th gears it's perfectly smooth and sounds like a turbine.
Can you isolate the noise as low in the front of the motor?
Myself and another owner (he had this happen twice!)experienced the cam gear breaking in half. We are the only two to report same in my year on the board. Both were low mileage about 2300 - 3000 miles. The sound was in the 1800-2500 RPM range. The mechanic listened and diagnosed by listening as possible roller chain noise - that might hop back in on its own. Bike was running strong when the gear broke and was noise free.
Run this scenario by your guys when you visit on Saturday.
