Probably not so much need as "want". We have a friend who had one put on his bike. And more than anything I think he was trying to out-do us on "pretty"

Robbie,
I bought one just to monitor my engine temp when I stop for food, gas, or a rest every time I ride. I don't want to wait for an idiot light (if I have one) or the engine to sieze if I can't smell the engine overheating. I am a pretty vigilant rider but there's always a chance that I could lose some/all engine coolant without knowing it and the gauge might just give me a warning that the engine is beginning to run hot! Take it for what it's worth...

Mike :-D

For those not-so-fortunate to have disposable income but still like the goodies, I got an analog oil temp guage (a dial for those without a PhD) that was meant for a Harley but fits perfectly in the Rockets' oil tank. And it was only about fifteen bucks, maybe twenty. I found it on ebay easily with a simple search. The only difference was the mark on the dipstick for the full level so I remarked it with a pair of wire strippers.

The optional OEM oil temp gauge traps moisture BTW, which makes it hard to decipher. And which thus defeats its purpose!!!. Moreover, once in there, some of that moisture cannot seemingly escape. So, unless Triumph makes it waterproof, this is definitely NOT a "must have" accessory.
