My Rocket has been missing beats in the morning but smoothes out after warmup. This morning, none of the right indicator lights was working and the engine ran rougher than normal. Then I turned it off and restarted and everything was fine.

My diagnoses...likely loose electrical connections....DUH!

So how do I go about fixing this in a logical manner wasting the least amount of time?

Me too! My Rocket is a feisty beast in the mornings, a bit like the wife I suppose and just like the wife, I have to treat her gently until she comes good.

Main problem is that on some mornings particularly if she has been sitting for a couple of days (very rare occurance), it pops and spits back through the intack if I feed it too much stick (opps, I mean throttle :-D ). After she has been ridden and warmed up a bit, she comes good.

Thats what I like about my bike, she's got real character with real high performance at your fingertips unlike some of those prissy little Japanese models.

I just let mine idle 2-3 minutes, while putting my helmet on, shutting the garage door, etc. WITHOUT touching the throttle at all. It smooths itself almost right away, idling @ a constant 500-600 rpm's, without ANY any spitting or coughing

Hey Ugarte...

Three ways to do this:

First... take it to the dealer.. its still under warranty.

Second... if number one is a pain, prop up your gas tank, and start disconnecting the electrical connectors under there. Do one at a time. Use a pair of small needle nose pliers and tweak the pins just a little. Put a little dielectric grease on the pins (available at any auto store) and snap the plug back together. These plugs have little latches that are easily opened by using a small pocket screwdriver to press on the release tab. DISCONNECT your battery before doing this... some of these wires are hot at all times. This should cure your problem and make the bike reliable in the cold and rain.

Three... if two doesn't fix it you will have to use a multimeter and or test light to find the open circuit. Hopefully you won't have to go that far...

Thanks guys that is just the sort of advice I was looking for. I think it is wise to put dielectic grease on all the E connections I just needed some more motivation than simply doing the wise thing on its own merit. Now, with a hicupping bike, I have it.

Rockets do seem to have very unusual cold start running features. Most fuel injected bikes i've seen will start out at a slightly raised rpm for up to a minute or so then settle down to normal rpm. This is all affected by ambient tempeture.
Rockets just seem to strive to idle correctly when first started on a cold morning or after sitting for a couple of days,
but then seem to clean up their act after 45 seconds or so and start idling correctly and no toher problems the rest of the day.
To me, it seems that the cold enrichment mapping is not written correctly. Is this something that can be corrected with a scanner hook-up?
