R3 Engine Question

Looked at an R3 Roadster at my local dealer on Saturday. He was telling me that the engine has a dry sump and an oil tank. He then said that the engine shares the oil with the transmission. Can someone please explain the setup as to how this works? My assumption is that dry sump = seperate transmission oil.

Thanks
Mike

The salesman was quite correct. The reason for a dry sump is to get the engine and gearbox as low as possible which in turn lowers the C of G. There are 3 drain plugs to drain the oil from the engine sump, oil tank and rear sump. My understanding is the oil is pumped from the sump up to the oiltank it's then pumped to the engine & gearbox before returning to the oiltank. Capacity after an oil & filter change is about 6.5 litres. The only other oil container is the final drive on the rear wheel.

Thanks for the clarification, I knew that it was a dry sump to get the engine lower. Just didn't know how the engine and transmission shared the oil. I just assumed that they were seperate.

Mike Triple is right and the oil pumping thru the trannshaft feeds the inside of the wet clutch. There is also a external line spraying the outside of the clutch basket. then runs down to the sump where the scavenger pump send it back to the tank. The bike has two pumps scavenger (low pressure) and the high pressure feed pump.
