I'm going to be changing my oil soon and need some advice regarding the oil & filter. I'm guessing I can use Amsoil either 10W40 or 20W50. I'm not sure about the 20W50 since the manual calls for 15W50. I'm guessing someone here has already researched this.... :???:

Since I'm changing oil once a year and I'm riding year round I'll be asking the engine to function from about 0-100 deg. F. I'm wondering if the 20W50 will be too heavy for the winter driving. I'm guessing that the 10W40 would probably handle the temperature range just fine but would like to use the 20W50 if it will provide added protection

Thanks again to everyone for your input.

Mtnwinds,
I run Amsoil 20w-50 year round, but I don't ride when it's below 45 degrees. Synthetics flow better in cold then conventional oil and you wont have any problems with the 20w-50. Most important thing in cold weather is start the bike don't rev it allow it to idle a little longer to get it up to operating temps. Amsoil or factory filters are all I would use. Fram filters will void a warranty in a Duramax diesel engine because they blow apart on cold starts. So I wouldn't recommend them, but to each his own. :-D Dave

I am an Amsoil dealer, I have been using 15-40, but will switch over to 20-50 when my order comes in next week. I always use Amsoil filters. I wanted to use the 15-40 for the final "break-in".

Thanks, Dave & Ron. Ron, what is the Amsoil # for the filter you use?

Hello Ron, does the chrome oil filter cover fit the Amsoil oil filter?

The Amsoil filter # is SM-103, it takes the same filter as a Honda GoldWing GL1800, And yes, the cover fits.
