Hi All,

My 1st post here. Glad to see that there is a place for R3heads to hang. My winter project is to uprev my 05 r3 a bit. I'll be adding NZ Thunderbike 3:3 pipes, a PCIII and a K&N RU5111 air filter. From everthing I have been reading this seems like a pretty low risk / high return way to get the performance and sound that the R3 is capable of without going totally overboard with turbo, nitrous and such. I only street and hwy ride so I don't really need to do 8 sec 1/4m.

I am interested in anyones comments , particularly those relating to alternate mods or dangers of what I am planning.

thanks!

Oakvillerat

Welcome to the family.

All upgrades are low risk with high gains. Go for it and hang on! I will be going for the PCIII soon to get rid of the popping (not bad) from my MadDogs. The Triumph tune for after market pipes is to broad and can't fit all of them.

Are you doing the cat bypass, or does Thunder pipes come with its own?

Welcome,

I would highly recommend that you get a custom dyno tune done with the power commander to maximize your performance. I noticed quite a difference between the PCIII tune for my set-up and the custom tune. Both tunes made an improvement in performance but the custom dyno tune was significantly better. A lot of people don't do the custom tune because they see that on avg. it only makes a 3-4 horsepower difference and similar difference in torque, however, more important is this difference through the entire rev range!

My r3 is currently set-up with TOR's (cat removed), stock air filter and custom dyno tune on PCIII. Moving from the PCIII tune for my set-up to the custom dyno tune I had an avg. increase of 3-4 horsepower from 2500 rpm to redline and an avg. torque increase of 6ft/lbs from 1200 to 1700rpm and from 2500 to redline. Not only was performance improved but the rideability of the bike through decceleration and acceleration is much smoother.

I am also going to custom tune my r3 with the 3 filter (RU-2780) set-up and see if that makes a performance difference. I will let everyone know when I get my filter's installed.

Thanks mike. I like the Thunderpipes because they show well on the dyno vs stock and sound great
( have a listen: http://www.thunderbike.co.nz/sales/r...s/000_0008.mov ) They include the cat bypass as well which I would have had to buy for $300usd. All three pipes and the bypass go for $1200NZ which is only about $950cdn so the price is right too.

will post results when I am done.

O.

Hey speed,

Thanks for the tip. It sounds worth it to get it dynoed particularly if I can get a few extra bhp to boot.

Oakvillerat,

It is good to hear from a fellow Canadian with an r3. I know that the r3 has been hard to come-by in Ontario up until recently. I currently reside in Maryland but have made several trips to Ontario over the summer and have never seen another rocket. I know that while sitting at stoplights I was inundated with questions regarding the rocket. I am sure that you receive a lot of attention when riding on your rocket. It is also not easy to aquire a PC-III, so I have been told! Good luck with your mods.

Thanks to everyone who welcomed me to the board. This is a great place to hang and learn a hell of a lot about the R3s.

Speed-

You're right the R3s are a bit of a rarity up here, the only other one I've seen was the sales managers from McBrides in TO where I bought mine. Everywhere I go people roll down their windows or stop me on the sidewalk to ask: 'how big is that engine?!' I tell them its only about 750cc......per cylinder. I found a bike shop in Whitby that sells and tunes PCIIIs so I'll take the bike there once the pipes and new filter are installed. Thunderbike has a great set of straight bars with no mods or parts needed for $250cdn so I'll probably throw them on too. Will post all when done.

see you around ,

O-rat

Oakville... All good Mods. I would also consider the newR3 engine flange covers if you haven't seen them (Often voted best mod for your buck) and do something with the suspension... progressive 440's or Wilbers or Ikon shocks make a huge difference in the ride quality and handling of the beast. :upthumb:
