Running my R3 today it started to herk and jerk under throttle like it was running out of gas! Now my light had been on since mile 75, which is normal for my baby but I have never experienced symptoms like this before. I get to the station and the bike only takes 4.8 gallons. After filling, the bike runs like a champ again. Anyone have similar experiences or advice on what I should do?

Any water get into the fuel? I had problem with that when I spilled gas all over the tank of my vs 800 and stupidly washed it down with the gas cap off. The bike ran like ***** for several miles before all the water went through. Any moisture in the tank will settle to the bottom, which is why it would cause trouble when the tank is near empty.

I can't think of a time when water would have been introduced. Maybe I should run some of that water-out additive... How did you clear your lines?

I cleared the lines by riding a rough running bike till it smoothed out. I knew what was happening so I didn't try to fix it. A better way would have been to remove the tank and drain the fuel out.

Unless you take a fuel sample and find water....

It could be an intermittant electrical problem also... but who knows?

I would worry about it unless it starts to happen on a regular basis. It could be something as stupid like when you accelerated the gas sloshed in your tank and you sucked some air??

We have people use Heet in their fuel injected cars and it doesn't hurt a thing... says on the label its safe for fuel injection... it helps remove water....

ALL:

If you are going to use an alcohol product to remove water from gas MAKE SURE IT IS:

ISOPROPOL BASED

DO NOT USE METHANOL BASED!!!

Isopropol is more expensive but far superior to methanol for removing water and is 100% inert for fuel injection systems.

Just trying to help!!

I ran into that the other day. I was lower with fuel. I took 5.8 but still should have had 1/2 gallon at least. but would not stay running.

Second on Garys' post. We put gas and water in 2 clear bottles. In one we added methanol based dryer and isopropol based in the other and shook them slightly to mix. Within 15 minutes the water and gas started to separate in the methanol bottle, after 24 hours had layer of gas on top of water. After 24 hours, the contents of the isopropol bottle stayed mixed, the water would burn off with the fuel.
Check fuel tank vapor lines (2) on left bottom side of tank to see if they are pinched between tank and rubber cushion on frame. If pinched they will not allow water to drain from filler area, when you open the cap, water drains into tank.

Revenge;

That's interesting... My fuel light does not come on untill I cross the 125-135 miles +. I have personally ran out of gas at 212.5 miles... I even posted it in the subject line about a month ago.... The bike holds 6.2 gallons... but will begin to skip, miss, etc at 5.8 gallons...due to little gravity.
