I have noticed that the great majority of modifications discussed on this forum relate to increased air flow. I was told by a "mechanic and dyno tune expert" who has spent most of his life in the racing industry, that in most cases increasing air flow by adding filters directly to the intakes decreases low end performance and causes most motorcycles to run extremely lean as the fuel pump and injectors can't force enough fuel to maintain an ideal air/fuel ratio. Is this the case with the r3 stock fuel injectors and fuel pump? Are the stock injectors and pump suitable for such modifications?

The answer is yes. If they were not - there would not be any EFI maps or use for the PC3... These are the fuel delivery parts of the equation (along with air in and exhaust out.)

I had cat off and TORs with 20054 tune. Installed 3 filters and removed secondary plates, drove to dealership and noticed slight improvement. Installed 20056 map, big difference. No lean burn type hesitation or intake pop back.

ejmoment is right it seems... with the PC III, and especially if you have the accellerator pump feature on.. I would say it runs rich. My proof of this is the gas mileage you get..

Tomo,

I agree, the PC-III custom tune that I currently use also tends to run the bike a little rich, especially at low rpms. I have noticed that I get about 30-50 miles less per tank of gas. Thanks for the info!

There is a limit to how much gas the fuel system can deliver to the pistons, but as of yet there are no mods or upgrades that overcome that limit. This is something to worry about for highly supercharged or turbo'd engines, but even in those cases, the engineers should be designing blower systems that do not over power the stock fuel delivery system. If they do, then they should also be supplying replacements for the fuel delivery components as well.
