I had the opportunity to ride a Rocket with both the CAT box removed and the Triumph TOR conversion, I liked the throaty sound but it was a bit too loud for my tastes long-term.

I’m thinking that just going with the CAT box bypass might put me somewhere in the middle sound wise…anyone have just the bypass? Do you like it? Does it give the throaty sound this monster deserves without making your ears bleed on long highway trips?

Thanks

Done this , makes a good compromise , more sound and tone , but definetly not to loud .
Done several 4 - 500 mile days with no probs .

Get it done....

Yup that's what I have for same reason. Don at Baxter (not only one of the best Triumph mechanics this side of the pond but also one of the nicest) even let me listen to it with part TOR/stock. He said some people like that setup but to me it sounded like an old VW trike with a couple of plugs fouled. Yech.

So I went catless-only which definitely gives it nice lil' growl compared to the pure stock system (which sounds about a racy as a Toyota minivan). It is a sedate growl though, it will not offend. For those who gauge a good exhaust by the number of middle fingers extended and car alarms set off, it will not be enough.

This was the first exhaust change I made. It is still quiet at idle and leaving in the morning. When you crank on the throttle it will impress you. Not real loud but it will put a smile on your face. There will be a noticable Hp increase.

I now have MadDogs and the Hp difference is impressive. I do think that after I get a Power commander III and have the bike tuned on a dyno it will be all that it can be.

A lot of people will put on the cat bypass pipe and then put on one TOR... it gets you noticed but its not obnoxious. This is what I did at first.

I decided to try the Mad Dogs and kept the cat bypass... and its awesome. With the under the tank K&N, secondary throttle plates removed, and PC III it runs pretty darn good.

Here I thought I had this figured out and a new question arises…

A dealer service told me that some RIII’s come with a CAT in the Box, and others are empty. I have the CAT, denoted by the “C” on the box, while a friend is running empty, denoted by an “N”.

The sound of the two bikes is identical, which makes me wonder…will the CAT bypass pipes make my bike really sound any different, or just the same as his empty box?

I imagine mine with the bypass pipes will equal his in terms of HP but I could be wrong on this.

Can anyone help with these two issues? Sound and power on a CAT vs Empty vs Bypass Pipes?

Thank again guys!

Hey bikernoob,

Go to the R3 forum. I posted this earlier and quite a discussion followed with photographs of an open cat. Very helpful info.

Ready to ride tomorrow night?

PS: bottom line is we need to order the cat kit.

The bypass is louder than either catbox, and it makes more power than either cat box. The catbox, with or without the cat, is full of chambers, walls and baffles and weighs a lot. The bypass pipe, while not the most efficient design, is a lot more open and free flowing than either catbox and weighs less (something like 10 pounds??)
